A Sneak Preview At Aveda's Culture Clash with Janell Geason

On Monday January 27, Aveda's Artistic Directors will gather on one stage to launch the Aveda Spring/Summer 2014 Collection: Culture Clash. The looks are a collision of gritty and glamorous – tribal, folkloric, futuristic and chic.

We spoke to Janell Geason, Aveda's Global Artistic Director for Makeup, about the must-see presentation and the new collection:

Can you share a sneak tip for working with the products in the collection?
My tip is to not be afraid to mix and match this season's colors to make it uniquely personal. Also, play with textures and using the Color Options Eye Shadow Transformer to create new textures.

Pantone recently choose "Radiant Orchid" as the color of 2014. How will we see this trend play out in makeup?
We will see tints, tones and shades of orchids in makeup this season whether they are worn on the eyes or lips. Orchid is a very feminine color which works beautifully on all skin tones. Our Petal Essence Eye Color Single New Lilac is a beautiful tint of orchid and consumer friendly.

Are there any other makeup color trends we should watch out for?
Also watch for pinks and metallic copper/bronzes.

Do you have a favorite product from the collection?
My favs are Nourish-Mint Lip Liner in Cactus Bloom and Nourish-Mint Smoothing a Lip Color in Peruvian Lily. I also love Petal Essence Eye Color Single in Burnished Bronze.

Do you have any advice for new makeup artists starting out?
My advice is to work hard, stay positive, take in everything and be nice. My best advice is a quote, " Don't let people's compliments get to your head and don't let their criticism get to your heart." - unknown author.

Be sure to catch Janell at the must-see Aveda Culture Clash presentation at ISSE Center Stage on Monday, January 27 (11-11:45AM)! Aveda Global Artistic Directors Allen Ruiz (2013 North American Hairstylist of the Year), Ian Michael Black, Ricardo Dinis and Tippi Shorter will also be presenting techniques behind this multidimensional and multicultural collection.
