Step 1: Apply a color guard around the hairline to prevent staining.
2. Section off the hair with a central zig-zag parting on top of the head, from the center of the eyebrow to the crown (1½" wide).

Step 3: Twist the hair and clip it to get it out of the way.
Step 4: Even out pre-existing color with slices of dark and light, accordingly.
The top zig-zag section will be darker.

Step 5: Model had a ½" regrowth. It was covered with a medium warm brown ash mixed with 20-volume developer.
Step 6: Use a retouch formula to cover the ½" of regrowth.

Step 7: Apply the same base color to the top zig-zag section.
Step 8: Don't forget the nape area.

Step 9: Work the color in to achieve uniform saturation.

Step 10: Take ends that are still dark and pick and foil with blonde color and 30-volume developer.
Apply just to the ends to produce a “lived in feel.”
Step 11: Process for 30 minutes.

Step 12: Apply a toner to shampooed, towel-dried hair.
Step 13: Process for 12 minutes.
Step 14: Spray hair with a volumizer for added lift, shine and heat protecton.
Blow dry with a large round brush.
