What is the best way to correct red hair color done at home? The beginning palate is a level 4-5 red auburn that lacks brightness with faded ends in orange and gold. The end result goal is to have a level 6 red with brilliance and consistency in tone from root to ends.  First, a mixture of primary red and primary gold with 20-volume is applied in a balayage technique using foils to keep them separated from the rest of the hair.

Step 1:  Section the hair for application speed and accuracy.

Step 2:  Begin applying color to the back, panel 4.

Apply a combination of equal parts primary red and primary gold color mixed with 20-volume developer to sections of the hair using a balayage technique.

The color is also applied root to ends while using foils to keep the sections separated from the rest of the hair.

Step 3:  After the back is completed, move towards the front beginning around the face and taking diagonal sections, working towards the top of the head.

The front and top are the last areas to apply. This will allow them to be slightly lighter.

Step 5:  Once the entire head is foiled, view the head from the front, sides and back to make sure that the amount of hair left out of the foils is even.

Process the color for 30 minutes.

Step 6:  After removing the foils (do not shampoo yet), apply an express color level 6 red over the entire head for 15 minutes.

This process blends the rest of the hair while maintaining color depth variation.

Step 7:  After shampooing, apply styling aids that are appropriate for fine naturally curly hair.

Step 8:  After blow-drying 70% of the water out of the hair, use a 1" round brush to smooth and relax the curls.

Use the nozzle on the blow dryer to control the airflow and keep it directly on the brush.

Proceed with the same process from the front of the hair to the back.

Smooth and soften the curl by stretching and heating each section.
