Get to know the talented NAHA finalists!

Name: Maryl Velbeck
Salon: Maryl V. Salon, Rowland Heights, CA - Owner
Finalist Category: Editorial Stylist Finalist- I am the ONLY underwater hair stylist/colorist to be nominated ever for NAHA- I have been nominated for Editorial Stylist category for NAHA three times- 2008 (studio editorial) 2009 (first underwater editorial ever nominated - Dream Deep) 2013 ( second underwater editorial ever nominated for NAHA- Sea Sirens)

Reason I became a hair stylist:
I was BORN a hair stylist with a comb in my hand! It's all I ever wanted to be- I had a subscription to Vogue Magazine by the time I was 10 years old. I would look at the pictures for hours, and already wanted to do hair and makeup for magazines! My dreams have certainly come true! In addition to being published all over the world, I have my own salon and passionately do education in the beauty biz.

Best advice I would give a new stylist:
STUDY STUDY STUDY after getting out of school- study online, trade shows, academies, apprentice - not only hair skills study BUSINESS and MARKETING skills! Get yourself out there with an online presence too. The industry today changes at such a fast pace- staying on top of it is a must. Over 25 years into being a stylist, I still study the beauty business CONSTANTLY.

The funniest thing that ever happened to me:
I was on location at a church preparing a bride and her wedding party for their joyful day. We started early in the morning on a Saturday- There was a funeral going on that morning at the church before the wedding. I went to step out of the bridal prep room to get something. I opened the door to the room and WHAM! I slammed the door right into the coffin in the hallway for the funeral! I PUT A HUGE NICK IN THE COFFIN with the door edge! Needless to say I very discreetly closed the door, and informed the bridal party to stay in the room for now, as the funeral was going on!
