LP: Would you like to share some techniques that you teach your salon colorists for building a color business?

GK: As far as our colorists building their books, our advice is simple:

  • Be present for your guests.
  • Be professional.
  • Be consistent and dependable.
  • Always keep abreast of new technology and techniques.
  • Give gifts of complimentary glazes and spot foiling (two-to-four foils) to introduce guests to new color.
  • Invite guests to bring their friends and make all of them your raving fans!
  • Always have integrity in everything that you do. Only make recommendations for services that guests really need.
  • Don’t stop at being a good colorist; strive to be a great colorist!

LP: What are the best and worst things that a colorist can do for his/her career?

GK: The best thing a colorist can do is to stay fresh through ongoing education. The worst thing they can do is to become complacent or overconfident. Never take your guests for granted!

LP: What inspirations do you draw upon to create on-trend color designs?

GK: I walk through my day with my eyes wide open. Inspiration is everywhere; we must be open to receive it.

LP: What should other colorists who aspire to educate be doing in order to guide their career in this direction (educating for companies)?

GK: First and foremost, they must be passionate about teaching and haircolor. They need to specialize in color so that they can focus on going to a whole new level of expertise and performance. They must believe in what they say or do. Educators must also work in salons so they can teach salon reality. They themselves must grow and continue to challenge themselves. I have grown more in the last 11 years than in the first 25 years! Be devoted, loyal and work with integrity. Always strive to make a difference as an educator and in your salon.

LP: Lastly, what are your strongest educational goals for your upcoming webinar on BeautyLaunchpad.com?

GK: My upcoming webinar won’t be about teaching how to color hair. Rather, my goal will be to inspire those interested in color to think differently. I want them to give up the “same old color routine” and look at new approaches. I’m not a technique-driven colorist, but rather a results-driven colorist! (I always keep in mind that our guests are not paying for the technique; they’re paying for the results.) I will share a lot of practical tips and applications. I hope to inspire colorists to try simple techniques that produce brilliant results!
