Cherry Petenbrink Performs Wanderlust Hippie Make-Under on Kerri Kenney

In the new film Wanderlust starring Jennifer Aniston and Paul Rudd, the pair find themselves in an out-of-the-way commune populated by colorful characters. Joico Guest Artist Cherry Petenbrink was called upon to transform one of those characters; she provided actress Kerri Kenney with a dramatic “make-under” to change her existing Level 6, color processed hair into a “gone-gray” hue shot with silver strands for her portrayal of one of the commune’s Bohemian residents.

Petenbrink was tapped by the film’s hair department head Linda Flowers to perform the job on Kenney, who is well-known for her role on Comedy Central’s Reno 911. “Linda had a very clear concept and image for this character,” reveals Cherry, who served colorist of choice for the Hunger Games. “She told me that Kerri had to look like a low-maintenance hippie chick, but still come across as sexy and feminine.  And, they didn’t want her to wear a wig.”

Knowing that accomplishing this type of transformation and ensuring that it appeared as if Kenney had grayed naturally wouldn’t be easy, Cherry turned to Joico Vero K-PAK Color to produce the steely gray and ash blonde tones necessary to accomplish the desired hue. Her strategy was to pre-lighten the actress’s locks with Joico VeroLight Lightening Powder + 30 volume developer, using back-to-back slices, off of the scalp. After processing, she towel dried the hair and applied the same lightener with 20-volume developer to the regrowth area. Finally, she applied four different steely gray and ash blonde formulas, alternating weaves and slices, to create the actress’s hippie-silver shade:

Formula 1 (base color) – Joico Vero K-PAK Color 1-oz. 10A + 1 oz. 9A + ½ oz. INS Silver Intensifier
Formula 2--1 ½ oz. TSB Silver Blonde + 1 inch TSG Steel Gray
Formula 3—1 ½ oz. HLA High Lift Ash Blonde + 1 inch INS Silver Intensifier + 20 volume developer
Formula 4—Joico Vero K-PAK Chrome Demi Permanent V9 Platinum
Cherry also colored and applied 18 inch custom human hair extensions to amplify the effect.

After several months of filming, Kerri’s natural shade had re-emerged when she returned to Cherry’s salon to have her extensions removed. Last month, she appeared on the red carpet for the Wanderlust premiere sporting a much more glamorous hue than that of her film character—a creamy, buttery blonde.
“Kerri’s red carpet blonde shade was a wonderful contrast with co-star Jennifer Aniston’s beautiful highlights and lowlights in tones of honey and caramel blonde,” Cherry comments. “The two actresses represented two beautiful aspects of the blonde spectrum.”

To re-create Kerri’s current shade, Cherry recommends the following double-process formulas:
1. Lift all strands with Joico Vero K-PAK HLN High Lift Neutral Blonde + double 40 Veroxide.  Process 55 minutes, shampoo and towel dry.
2.  Tone with Joico Vero K-PAK Chrome equal parts N9 + G9. Process 10 minutes for extra depth and gloss.
