The National Interstate Council of State Boards of Cosmetology (NIC) announces formal support for universal licensing recognition for the beauty professional communities. As part of this initiative, NIC is partnering with Certemy, a leading provider of professional licensing management software, to introduce a new National Credential and a new National Database.

Universal licensing recognition will help our industries streamline national standards for cosmetology, barber, manicure, esthetics and related professions in the education and training programs, while promoting license portability across state lines. “As the leading advocacy organization for the cosmetology and related professions, we look forward to helping our industries embrace these new opportunities.

What is the NIC National Credential?
The NIC National Credential is available to individuals who have taken the NIC Written, Practical and/or Written Practical examinations. This credential will demonstrate an individual is recognized and validated by NIC. We plan to launch the NIC National Credential in late 2021.

What is the NIC National Database?
The NIC National Database will provide a national and international registry of participating professionals in the beauty industries. The database will include licensure status, expiration dates and any restrictions on license if appropriate. NIC/Certemy will provide a simple mechanism for participating state boards to upload data in order to keep the database current. A licensee’s record can show every state they are licensed in and the type of licenses. States, Licensed Professionals and Employers will be able to perform online searches of the database at any time to confirm active licensure, if validated by the originating state of licensure. NIC plans to launch the National Database in 2022.
