1 Humankind
People inspire me. My most popular service is the “Virtual Curly Cut,” wherein I instruct clients how to cut their hair step by step via video conferencing. Interacting with clients on almost every continent every week reminds me that we are all the same in many ways, regardless of our different cultural backgrounds. I treasure these interactions; they’re the reason why I love what I do.
2 Art
I love museums, art galleries and shows. I also enjoy creating oil paintings, pastel drawings and pencil drawings. Art always inspired me, but I never imagined that I could produce it. My husband introduced me to the world of drawing and painting, and I began to see the world differently—including hair. When I look at something or someone, I now see every aspect of that subject. I learned to see lines, shadows, color and negative space. I see the artistic possibilities in every head of hair that I encounter. Every client becomes my muse; I want them to look and feel like a masterpiece!
3 Fashion Shows and Photo Shoots
I love being part of the buzz, excitement and creativity of a fashion show. I also enjoy the planning stage and the creative process of a photo shoot. The feeling of working with other creatives and successfully executing an artistic vision at a shoot is unmatched.
4 Travel
Travel is essential for me. It inspires all of my senses—sight, smell, touch, hearing and taste. One of my favorite trips was visiting Petra, Jordan. I rode a camel and swam in the Dead Sea, which is the lowest point on earth. I love experiencing other cultures and meeting people around the world. On every trip, I have to visit a salon and purchase local hair products in that area. It’s inspiring to see fellow hair artists worldwide at work, doing what they love.
5 Mid-Century Design
My favorite interior designs come from the mid-century era. I love that era’s sleek, modern and well-thought-out design, and I have collected furniture and decor from that period. One of my favorite inspirations is my Olivetti Valentine red typewriter—someday, I’m going to redesign my salon based on the design of this typewriter.
6 Nature
I love nature…period. I see beauty in a vibrant sunset, the ocean on a stormy day, or a beautiful hummingbird whizzing by. I often equate the textures of nature with the variety of hair textures.
