Q&A with Salon Owner

Beauty Launchpad (BLP): What is the backstory of your salon? What motivated you to start your business?

Becky Miller (BM): Since I was 17 years old, I have worked in a salon. From a receptionist to a salon manager, I have worked every position within a salon. In 2015, after working behind the chair for years, I began to travel and educate on my color techniques. I absolutely fell in love with teaching other artists. Throughout my years educating, I met so many salon owners, booth renters, commission employees, etc. I started to see a shift in the industry and a need to provide a space that embraced the way the industry was heading. Commission salons were dying because stylists wanted more freedom and a fair pay system. They craved leadership and education. I felt that my next step in my career was to create a space I would want to work in.

BM: After traveling to so many salons for education, I started to journal all the elements that I would love to have in my salon space. I envisioned a clean, beautifully lit and open space that felt both comfortable and luxurious. To bring this vision to life, I hired a talented interior designer. Together, we incorporated natural wood tones to create a homely vibe, complemented with black and brass accents. One of the standout features is the large skylights installed above our shampoo bowls, which provide stunning natural light. We also made sure the layout was both functional for our team’s daily workflow and flexible enough to easily transform the space for larger classes when hosting visiting artists.

BLP: What services do you provide your clients? Are any of these services signature and/or exclusive to your salon?

BM: We are known for our custom dimensional coloring. We use a few signature techniques, including the Reverse Balayage.

BLP: What products are used/retailed in your salon? Do you have a personal favorite?

BM: We carry Oribe Hair products. We are in love with the quality and smell of the line. Some of our top favorite products would be texturizing sprays.

BLP: What makes your salon unique and stand out?

BM: It’s what I am most proud of, which is our team culture. We get so many clients commenting on how cool it is to see a team that works so well together and has fun while doing so. We are a team that jumps in to help with whatever is needed. I believe the culture is a direct reflection of leadership, and my husband (co-owner) and I work hard to always give them our absolute best. Parlour One Salon chairParlour One Salon chairCourtesy of Parlour One Salon

BLP: What takeaway do you hope clients have after a visit at your salon?

BM: I hope they feel valued and that they feel like our services and atmosphere are valuable to them. I hope they feel confident and inspired.

BLP: What piece of advice would you give to a new salon owner?

BM: Be able to adapt and know when to pivot. Hire slow and intentionally. Listen to your team, and don’t be too quick to respond. Communication is everything. People want to be led by someone they feel will listen and respect what they have to say. Lastly, be confident enough to make decisions that will uphold your vision and values, even when that means a team member is not getting what they want.

BLP: What changes do you want to see in the industry to help salon owners and hairstylists working in salons grow and thrive?

BM: It all comes down to improved communication between salon owners and their teams. There is still a stigma surrounding commission-based salons that needs to change. This starts with salon owners stepping up to do better, and, in turn, stylists trusting and respecting their owners.

BLP: What’s next for your salon? Do you have any goals for 2025?

BM: My goal is to continue growing a brand that is recognized within the industry, providing our team with the foundation to build successful careers. I want to create a platform where our team members can pursue their individual goals, such as brand partnerships and educational opportunities.
