Beat the Heat: Summer Hair Tips from Kenna Kennor

There are many factors that make summer one of the most enjoyable seasons of the year - pool parties, backyard barbecues, and warm, sunny days, to name a few - but those same things can often lead to a great deal of hair damage. Anything from exposure to chlorine, to excessive sun, to increased humidity can leave hair dry, brittle, and uncontrollable.

Below, Kenna Kennor, a renowned fashion and editorial hairstylist with salons in London and New York City, shares his advice for clients hoping to prevent summertime damage and tame their manes.

Problem: Sun
Since the sun can be very strong, even stronger than any hair coloring chemical, an important summer accessory should be a hat or scarf to wear during long days under the sun. Add a leave-in moisturizing treatment (try Evo's Happy Campers hard-working moisturizer) with sun protection onto wet hair before stepping out.

Problem: Chlorine
After swimming, rinse hair under fresh water. The longer chlorine stays in your hair, the more damage it can cause. Both chlorine and salt water can strip your hair of moisture, leaving strands brittle and dried out. If you are trying to achieve beachy waves, try a moisturizing salt spray such as PARLOR by Jeff Chastain's Moisturizing Sea Salt Spray.

Problem: Humidity and Frizz
During the humid summer months, even the straightest of hair isn't safe from frizzing. If you decide to blow out your hair, try applying an anti-humidity spray (try Oribe's Impermeable Anti-Humidity Spray) after drying. Then run a flat iron over the hair to seal the cuticles and give your smooth hair some backup.

Problem: Heat
Always remember to use the right temperature on hair when using hot tools, especially when you've been out in the sun all day. Ghd tools use try-zone technology which helps moderate the temperature, causing less damage to hair both in the short and long term.
