Many cosmetic recalls in the U.S. relate to microbial contamination. A few years ago, the APU reported that ten in 35 (nearly one-third) of U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recalls as of Dec. 4, 2019, were due to mold, yeast, fungal or bacterial contamination.

One might be quick to assume this is due to alternative preservatives — whose use has surged in recent years — not doing their job. However, as experts from the University of Cincinnati and the Personal Care Products Council (PCPC) explain in this sponsored interview, it's more than alternative preservatives to blame.

Here, Geoff Waby, regulatory affairs and vigilance officer for Obelis Group, and Deepika Raina, head of microbiology and manufacturing hygiene at L'Oréal, describe the issues of microbial contamination in cosmetic products and the importance of understanding the manufacturing process holistically.

Both are co-chairs of the PCPC Manufacturing Hygiene Task Force. They additionally are professors of the University of Cincinnati's all-new Hygienic Manufacturing of Cosmetic Products Graduate Certificate program, which is also highlighted here.
