
The Society of Cosmetic Chemists (SCC) has announced the recipients of its most prestigious awards, to be presented in person at the society’s 79th Annual Scientific Meeting and Showcase, held Dec. 16 and 17, 2025, at the Sheraton NY Times Square in New York.
Green Star Award: Luis Mejia of the Estée Lauder Cos.
This year’s Green Star Award, sponsored by Colonial Chemicals and recognizing outstanding achievement in sustainable cosmetic formulation, goes to Luis Mejia of The Estée Lauder Companies for his Aveda Abundant Blowout Volumizing Spray formula. This submission earned the highest Green Star rating for its exemplary use of renewable, biodegradable and non-toxic materials, as well as eco-friendly production processes and sustainable packaging.
In addition, Chris Rosenthal of Enviromedica receives an honorable mention for Ancient Minerals – Mineral Deodorant Cream, which stood out for both product efficacy and innovation in sustainability.
"The SCC, through the generosity of Colonial Chemical, is proud to recognize the efforts of cosmetic science professionals formulating green, natural products with safety, efficacy and sustainability in mind,” said Erica L. O’Grady, chief executive officer of the SCC.
Submissions were reviewed by the Green Star Award Selection Committee, a team of formulation and ingredient experts, based on the Green Star rating system, which emphasizes maximizing natural components, novelty, innovation, efficacy of green ingredients, production and packaging sustainability.
Maison G. deNavarre Medal Award: Jennifer Marsh, Ph.D.
“This year, the society is presenting its highest honor to Jennifer Marsh, Ph.D., in recognition of her industry expertise and contributions to advancing cosmetic science,” O'Grady stated. "We are pleased to formally recognize all that she has accomplished during her exceptional career and more than 18 years of membership in SCC.”
Marsh's extensive contributions include more than 50 hair care and hair color patents, four books, numerous presentations and publications, significant leadership within SCC and the broader industry, and serving as a scientific advisory board member and judge for Cosmetics & Toiletries (C&T) and the C&T Allē Awards, respectively.
SCC Education Award: Jane Hollenberg
In addition, Jane Hollenberg will be presented the SCC Education Award, sponsored by Symrise. "This award recognizes Jane as an individual making outstanding contributions to the field of cosmetic science education and mentorship," said O'Grady.
Hollenberg's vast involvement spans decades, including leading SCC’s Education Advisory Committee, authoring books and receiving multiple accolades for her work in color cosmetics, among many other roles.
Florence Wall Women in Cosmetic Chemistry Award: Dolores Kenney
The society’s award honoring a woman’s scientific and leadership contributions in the cosmetics and personal care industry will be presented to Dolores Kenney, attorney at law at Olson & Cepuritis, Ltd.
"Dolores has left an indelible impact as a mentor, leader and advocate, contributing both scientifically and as a champion of women in the industry," stated O'Grady. The Florence Wall award is sponsored by the SCC New York chapter.
Merit Award: Michelle D. Hines, Ph.D.
According to O'Grady, Michelle Hines has been an outstanding advocate, leader and cheerleader for the SCC during the course of her nearly 20-year membership.
"On behalf of the National organization and the Southwest Chapter, we congratulate Michelle and thank her for her unwavering passion for and service to SCC," O'Grady wrote.
Hines' impact includes more than 150 patents and leadership at both local and national levels, including service as the SCC national president in 2022.
Robert A. Kramer Lifetime Service Award: Mindy Goldstein, Ph.D.
Finally, the Robert A. Kramer Lifetime Service Award goes to Mindy Goldstein, Ph.D., who according to O'Grady, continues to be an outstanding advocate for SCC and an active volunteer, both locally and nationally.
“For her contributions throughout 34+ years of membership, we are thrilled to present Mindy with this award with our thanks for her dedication and service to SCC," O'Grady said.
Goldstein's leadership encompasses two terms as SCC National President, numerous editorial and committee roles — including as a C&T scientific advisory board member and C&T Allē Awards judge — and mentorship across the field.
