Latin women love flowing, touchable hair! But it’s important to remember that these clients aren’t exactly the wash and go types—they’re all about polish and glamour. So as February 14 approaches, and your clients drop in for swoon-worthy style, keep it soft and real, but be sure that your work is finished to perfection!
When it comes to representing the sexiness and style of the Latina woman, there is probably no better role model than Jennifer Lopez. She always gets it right and her looks serve as benchmarks for many glamour-conscious salon clients. One of her most frequently-seen looks—soft, polished waves—is also among the most requested in the salon.
To achieve this look on clients with thick, naturally wavy hair, I start with Biolage Exquisite Oil Shampoo and Conditioner, which offers control without weight. Next I apply the new Biolage Agave Nectar Control Gel, which controls frizz with medium hold, tons of pliability and no stiffness or stickiness. Once the gel is distributed, I dry each section with a round brush, using my brush as a setting tool. I wrap the hair around the brush, remove each strand without disturbing the curl, and clip it. The sections in the crown area are clipped on base; the rest of the hair is secured at the highest point of the cheekbone for a modern, beach-wave look. When the hair cools, I release the curls slowly and gently, tousle the lengths with my hands to blend the sections, and work a small amount of Biolage ExquisiteOil Protective Treatment through the mids and ends for shine and polish. Pull the oil through the hair gently with your fingers so that you don’t disturb the curl.
For a dressier variation on loose waves, I like to create a side-swept glam look, secured by a trendy braid. To get the look, I apply Biolage Blow In Control Crème to damp hair—it softens thick locks while retaining shape memory. Working with a round brush and blow dryer, I smooth the top sections, then twirl the midlengths and ends around the brush, creating large, loose curls. I release the hair without moving the curls and continue until all of the hair is “set” with the brush. Once the hair is cool, I direct the curls to one side and on the opposite side, I create a standard or fishtail braid that begins at the hairline and wraps around the head. I secure the braid with crisscrossed pins, placed underneath the hair. Finally, I reinforce the curls by wrapping each one around my hand while spraying with Biolage Complete Control Spray.
