Trend Report: Antoinette Beenders at Aveda Congress 2013

For her much-anticipated evening presentation at this year's Aveda Congress, Aveda Global Creative Director Antoinette Beenders found inspiration in the whimsy and excitement of the circus. According to Beenders, "Circus troupes were the original nomads. They traveled from town to town and worked extremely hard." She elaborated that her performance was "all about creating prestige hair that inspires others to creativity and technical excellence."

Beenders' awe-inspiring spectacle included over 40 models and performers that merged circus and fashion into a never-before-seen "clown couture" that left the audience gasping with delight. The show featured an array of styles, most notably high-contrast hair against a backdrop of contortionists and acrobats during the "Black & White" circus segment.

The "Black & White" portion also included a demonstration of a commercial haircut inspired by Beenders' clown couture theme. Using a razor, Beender transformed a model's hair into a wig-like shape with chunky layers that evoked traditional clowns and circus performers, topped off with a blast from the blow dryer to accentuate texture.

Here, we have the how-to you need to recreate this whimsical, edgy look.

Step 1: Thoroughly saturate dry hair with Pure Abundance™ Style-Prep™ to prepare for the hair cut.

Step 2: Begin creating a rounded fringe by combing small sections forward and razor-cutting a choppy line approximately one inch above the brows that follows the shape of the hairline. Continue combing sections forward and cutting the fringe until you achieve the desired thickness and roundness.

Step 3: Moving to the right side, comb the entire back section toward the hairline. Comb small sections from the center parting downward, and razor-cut to the desired length, keeping weight through the sides and length on the top. Repeat on the left side.

Step 4: Refine the outline with the razor until you achieve the desired roundness, weight and texture.

Step 5:
Rough-dry the remaining Pure Abundance™ Style-Prep™ into the hair until it is 100% dry. Refine any areas, if needed.

Step 6: Finish with Air Control™ Hair Spray, shaping the hair until you achieve the desired shape and texture.
