NYFW Hairstyles How To: J. Mendel S/S 2014

For the J. Mendel Spring 2014 collection, designer Gilles Mendel parlayed prints inspired by the iconic French chanson Cargo Culte into a collection that embraced his signature luxe-feminine Parisian aesthetic. ”The collection is incredibly luxurious, but there's a sportiness and ease to the silhouettes that makes everything feel effortless. Anthony’s approach to the hair feels soft and natural, and his choice of a sleek side captures a beautiful sense of gamine chic,” said Mendel.

“I created the deep, smooth left side part as a masculine element to compliment and balance the femininity of the collection and the romantic texture of the hair cascading in the back,” explained L’Oréal Professionnel Artist Anthony Turner.

To create the look, hair was first sectioned from front to back, and a precise, deep left side part was defined. For the back section, Turner used the NEW L’Oréal Professionnel Perfect Texture texturizing spray). Perfect Texture was applied from mid-length to ends and worked through with fingers to enhance each model’s natural wave, while providing medium hold to control volume and tame frizz. Hair was dried briefly with a blow dryer and select pieces were loosely curled with an iron and tousled to enhance the variation in texture.

Next, the dramatic front section--a direct contrast to the natural waves of the back--turned sleek and shiny with L’Oréal Professionnel Mythic Oil, which was applied both before and after blow-drying for maximum shine and discipline. Finally, each side was smoothed back and placed behind the ears. L’Oréal Professionnel Infinium 3 hairspray set the full look in place.
