Hairstyles How To: Sunny Summer Hair

good in a collared shirt and pantsuit on TNT's King and Maxwell, she absolutely floats like a summer goddess on the latest cover of Redbook. Celebrity stylist Nathaniel Hawkins noted that the magazine wanted a look that was “summery but not beachy; beautifully finished but effortless," which he nailed. Romijn's hairstyle is full of volume and relaxed curls that even catch the sunlight.

Want to give clients this great style? Hawkins shared the behind-the-scenes step-by-step process to creating this masterpiece.

1.) He began by prepping the actress’s hair with Joico K-PAK Leave-In Spray Liquid Reconstructor to soften, detangle and prevent breakage.

2.) Next, in order to build maximum body and fullness, he turned to one of his favorite volumizers—Joico Power Whip Whipped Foam. “Mousse is always my first choice to create body,” he notes. Hawkins applied the Power Whip to a vent brush, divided the hair into three sections—right, left and back—and carefully worked the product into the hair in each section, roots to ends. The vent brush, unlike hand application, distributes a light, even coat throughout the entire strand.

3.) The long-lasting volume was key. He first tousle-dried the hair with a blow-dryer set on a medium temperature setting and high air flow, lifting it at the roots with his fingers. “Heat reduces fullness,” he reveals, “so I didn’t want the blow dryer to be too hot.”  Then he flipped her head over and blasted the roots in order to encourage the Power Whip to penetrate thoroughly.

4.) Once the hair was completely dry, he created long, 1 ½ inch diagonal sections, lifted each one and spiraled the hair around a 1 ¼ inch curling iron, directing each section away from the face. He clipped each curl into place and allowed the hair to cool and set completely for 20 minutes before removing the clips.

5.) To create the right finish, he misted the hair with Joico Instant Refresh Dry Shampoo at the roots, then lightly on midshafts and ends before using his fingers to tousle and shape the desired wave pattern.  To tame flyaways, he placed a dollop of Joico Super Shine Glossing Polish between his hands, rubbed them together to emulsify the product and ran his hands over the surface of the actress’s hair to smooth and control the shorter pieces.

6.) For added insurance during the outdoor shots, (the weather was hot and humid) he then misted Romijn’s hair with Joico Humidity Blocker Finishing Spray. For the rest of the day, his go-to formula was Joico Power Spray Fast-Drying Hair Spray, which kept Romijn's locks in place while also weightless-looking.
