Joico takes an acid trip back to the future at the Michael Angel show.
Designer: MIchael Angel
Products: Joico
If Bianca Jagger could trot a white horse into infamous Studio 54 today, she’d likely do so in one of Michael Angel’s psychedelic prints. The Australian designer’s spring collection, which is inspired by another ’70s fashion icon, Stevie Nicks of Fleetwood Mac fame, boogies chicly with high-contrast metallics, vertigo-inducing black-and-white swirl prints, and the aforementioned techno-perfect psychedelic ditties screened across sheer shirts, opaque shifts and floor-grazing pleated gowns. The looks are fresh and not at all retro; they’re full-frontal techno glamour with stunning details like smoky topaz Swarovski-encrusted straps and epaulettes, and strategic fabric paneling that mimics the look of early ’80s sci-fi sleeper Tron.
Rather than rewind to the ’70s for the hairstyles, Joico celebrity stylist George Papanikolas logically fast-forwards. “We decided to go for a futuristic look with hair that shows maximum sheen,” he says. “Michael’s modern take on metallics and strong prints plays a major part in the show, so we chose to go with blunt cuts on stick-straight hair that lend the style a modern edge. This style not only works with the metallics, but is also fairly simple so as not to distract from the bold prints.”
Lanky locks mostly find themselves sharply parted down the middle and strategically tucked behind the ears. Occasional deep side parts go right or left, “depending on the model’s face shape,” Papanikolas says, “but switching parts is always a great way to work a different look.”
