1907: Fromm International is formed. It begins as the “Illinois Razor Strop Company,” selling razor strops and straight razors to barbers. Over the years, Fromm develops into the number-one source of haircutting shears in the United States.

1909: With the help of a chemist friend, Elizabeth Arden virtually originates the concept of a “beauty cream.” Her first product offerings are promoted through her Fifth Avenue Beauty “Salon” (she rejected the word parlor as having too much of a “homey” connotation). Her salon sports a big red door to make it stand out among the other businesses in Manhattan’s fashion center.

1909: Garrett Morgan invents the first commercial chemical hair straightener. He markets the product under the name the “G. A. Morgan Hair Refining Cream.” In 1912, he also invents the gas mask.

1910: The first aluminum foil rolling plant—Dr. Lauber, Neher & Cie., Emmishofen—opens in Kreuzlingen, Switzerland. Metal foil, which has existed for centuries, is solid metal that has been reduced to a leaf-like thinness by beating or rolling. The first mass-produced and widely-used foil was made from tin. Tin was later replaced by Aluminum in 1910.

1910: Flowery Manicure Products is established in New York City. The company manufactures metal nail files and invents the emery board (a garnet abrasive on a wood center).
