By now, chances of you've heard tell of the ombré trend—or you've seen the dip-dyed strands taking over the runways and streets all over the world. Whichever is the case, ombré is here to stay—and its spring incarnation represents a new take on the look.
"Ombré isn't going anywhere, but it has a new twist for spring," explains Jennifer J., Wella Professional Colorist. "The color trend is becoming more feminine-looking, rather than the old, harsher, contrasting ombré—and it's flattering for any color. It looks as though you truly spent a day at the beach."
The more natural version of ombré makes sense in the context of spring 2013, as it reflects the resurgence of natural, romantic hues and hairstyles we've seen on the spring runways (from chic chignons to braids, low ponies, messy waves and undone updos).
"I do see a softer, more tonal complementing version of ombré emerging, keeping it fresh and modern compared to the ombré of past," muses Cherry Petenbrink, Joico Guest Artist. "Keeping the color melting within three levels and tonally complementary is what we're seeing so much of now—blondes, brunettes and reds alike. Keeping it balanced, also—midshaft to ends—is more current than what we've seen in the past: what appears to be roots, or grown out color. My celebrity clients are still requesting the new ombré on a regular basis."
