Celebrity Hairstyles How To: Joico Shares Hottest MTV Movie Awards Styles

When the statuette is the Golden Popcorn, zany Rebel Wilson struts her stuff in a leather cat suit and the most eagerly awaited award is for Best Movie Kiss, you have to wonder if you’ll find much in the way of noteworthy style at the MTV Movie Awards. But after some scrutiny, Joico’s eagle-eyed hair style and color trend mavens—International Artistic Director Damien Carney, Celebrity Spokesperson George Papanikolas and Joico Guest Artist Cherry Petenbrink--spotted several standouts! Selena Gomez’s Mohawk Braid

“This braid is pretty and playful with a rock and roll edge,” says Damien. “Plus it’s flattering—the sleek sides and center placement really lift the face and open up the features.”

Get the style:
Mist damp hair with Joico Smooth Cure Thermal Styling Protectant and blow-dry. If the texture is coarse or unruly, smooth dry hair with a flat iron.  Mist with Joico Power Spray Fast Dry Finishing Spray. Separate the fringe from the rest of the hair and clip away. Gather all remaining hair tightly at the top of the head, subdivide into three sections, create a classic three-strand braid from top to tip and secure. Release the fringe, backcomb gently and blend the front into the braid. “There is probably some artificial hair added to this braid,” observes Damien, “which is a good idea because it helps even out layers and adds length, which elongates the face and body.”

Kara Hayward’s Voluptuous Waves

This classic shape with lots of volume and movement is always flattering, declares Damien. For flexible hold, spray each section with Joico Power Spray Fast Dry Finishing Spray before setting on heated rollers.

Get the style:
Apply Joico Power Whip Whipped Foam to damp hair. Blow dry hair with a large round brush, adding curves and volume to each section.  Once hair is dry, set each section on heated rollers, directing the top away from the face and the side sections downward.  The size of each section should mirror the size of the roller.  Wrap the ends in tissue to keep them smooth.  Allow the rollers to cool completely before removing.  Once rollers are removed, use a Mason Pearson-style brush and thoroughly brush through all strands to blend and remove evidence of the rollers.  Apply a few drops of K-PAK Protect and Shine Serum to seal the ends and mist with Power Spray.

Working around the head in a spiral fashion, apply lightener to slices or weaves (depending on the desired result) in vertical diagonal sections, from one inch off of the scalp to the ends.  There will be 10-12 foils, depending upon the density of the hair.  On the top, create a diagonal parting and continue weaving or slicing in a criss-cross pattern from the crown to the front hairline.  In these sections, alternate the application two inches and three inches from the scalp to create an ombré effect.  Process to Level 8 and shampoo.
Glaze:  Joico Vero K-PAK Chrome ½ N8 + ½ B7 + Activator.
Apply scalp to ends.

Crystal Reed’s Abstract Beehive

“This texture isn’t wavy or curly, it’s more rippled and abstract,” Damien observes.  It’s perfect for hair that already has a natural bend or wave—it’s a beehive with a modern feeling.”

Get the style:

Apply Joico Smooth Cure Leave-In Rescue Treatment to damp, curly hair and air dry, encouraging the natural texture.  Combine a small amount of Joico Power Whip Whipped Foam and Power Gel Sculpting Gel and work the mixture through the hair for separation and movement.  Direct the hair to the center back, gather and fold it to create a pleat down the center. Secure with a vertical row of bobby pins.  “Use your fingers and work quickly,” Damien advises.  “The effect should be easy and understated—not overly perfect or polished!”[Photo by Jason Merritt/Getty Images][pagebreak]
