Beauty Launchpad (BLP): What three words would you use to describe your personal style?
Jess Rowland (JR): I would say three words to describe my personal style are edgy, classy and casual.
BLP: How has your style changed over the years?
JR: I’m not sure my style has changed much over the years, although I do keep up with the times. I wouldn’t say I really have a specific set style; I can be in sweats and sneakers one day, Dr. Martens and jeans the next day, and Louboutins and leather the day after. I’m a chameleon when it comes to what I wear, although my tattoos are always part of the outfit, and my outfit revolves around the shoes.
BLP: Is there an article of clothing/piece of jewelry/tattoo that holds a lot of meaning for you? Why?
JR: I have a few pieces of jewelry and tattoos that have a lot of meaning. My dad’s thumbprint necklace never leaves my neck since he passed. I never go without my engagement ring and wedding band because they’re a constant reminder of the support and love I’m given every day. They’re also a reminder of how far we have come in life—how much my husband and I have accomplished, and continue to accomplish, as a team and as parents.
I have so many tattoos, but each has a meaning. On my right arm I have all four seasons including some holidays, like Halloween and my birthday; my dad’s signature; scissors; and the word “strength” to get me through hard times. There is a rose on my hand signifying the roses my husband gets me for every occasion, and our wedding song lyrics are also on my arm. I have each of my daughters’ names on either arm. I drew most of my tattoos myself—the others are drawn freehand by my talented tattoo artist. My tattoos and possessions are humble daily reminders of things that have made me who I am today.
BLP: What is the best piece of fashion/beauty advice you’ve ever received?
JR: To be yourself; be your own style and your own vibe. I’m always one to go a little left and do my own thing—I now design, create and make my own hoodies and shirts with my unique little twists of creativity for my hair business.
