Backstage at Zac Posen, a proliferation of spectral color immediately arrests the eyes. The source is candy-tinged hair extensions—turquoise, canary yellow, blood orange, bright green, striking violet—that have beauty editors chasing the rainbow. Such neon colors are typically relegated to punk-rock hairstyles, but not this twisted beauty; rather, the ’do traces its roots to poise and restraint. “I pulled inspiration from ballerinas—Martha Graham, actually—for this chignon,” explains hair lead Odile Gilbert, who’s working with L’Oréal Professionnel. The extensions? “I want the chignon to look like ribbons are woven into it,” she answers simply.

First kneading a little Texture Expert Expansion mousse into strands to chunk-up the chignon’s spirals, Gilbert then slicks the model’s hair back into a tight, high ponytail, and deftly starts the process of twirling, whirling and twisting as she passes coat after coat of Infinium 3 Strong working spray over strands. Her approach is simple: Halve the ponytail, wind each half with an extension, and then twist those halves together into one hue-tiful helix.

To highlight each turn and twine, as well as silken the front of the style, Gilbert mists Texture Expert Perfect Shimmer through tresses for intense sparkle, and sets the look with Infinium 4 Extrême finishing spray. “This style is complementary to Zac’s bright collection, and makes a simple, yet graphic statement,” Gilbert concludes. —Karie L.
