Professional hairdressing has a rich history, one that iconic brand Goldwell has a big part in. For over 75 years, the brand has continuously innovated to improve the stylists life and career. It is often recognized for its role in the evolution of professional hair color, but the company has innovated in nearly every professional hair care category in an effort to improve stylist efficiency and the client result.

Since its inception by Hans Erich Dotter in 1948, Goldwell has always remained true to innovating to improve the stylist's career. It was initially founded to produce hair care products exclusively for the hairdresser but over the years has championed a thioglycolic acid cold perm that made the stylist's and client's life easier, a new shampoo dispensing system for stylists, an innovative aerosol technology for better styling, permanent hair color to meet stylists needs, an air-form perming system, the first oxidative semi-permanent color and so much more.

When it comes to professional color, though, the company is unmatched with the introduction of iconic brands Topchic, Colorance and Elumen. As we celebrate the GOLD anniversary of Goldwell's Topchic brand, we celebrate all the waves that the brand has made and continues to make in professional color.

Putting the Gold In Goldwell

In 2024, Goldwell celebrates the 50 year anniversary of its entry into the permanent color market with Topchic, truly putting the gold in Goldwell.

Though the company has been in business for over 75 years — no small feat of its own — this year it celebrates the lasting excellence of its permanent hair color gamechanger that made waves in 1974, Topchic. Since its inception, Topchic has been synonymous with performance, delivering vibrant, long-lasting hair color. With its innovative and user-friendly formulas, Topchic has become the go-to choice for stylists seeking intense color, excellent evenness, ultimate durability and superior coverage with every application.

Topchic has remained the choice for stylists for 50 years by never settling for less that excellent. The success of Topchic can be attributed to its unwavering commitment to performance and continuous improvement that brought Goldwell’s color offerings to unmatched levels.

This has included 60 patents and continuous innovation and improvement, as technology and the industry became more advanced. Over the years, Goldwell has consistently refined and expanded the Topchic range, introducing new shades, formulations and technologies to ensure that stylists have access to some of the most advanced tools for creating stunning hair color transformations. This includes its Dye Penetration System, Reflects System, CoolProtect Technology, Equilizer System 2.0, Chromax Technology, Highlift Control System, Raymax Technology and its Coemzyme Technology.

The brand’s 50th anniversary celebration is an opportunity to pay a tribute to the countless passionate stylists who have embraced Topchic over the years, making it an integral part of their professional toolkit. Goldwell continues to be inspired by each professional’s passion and strives to continue to deliver best-in-class color they can trust.

Color Of the Year: Midnight Berry

The wait is over, as Goldwell has announced its 2024 Color of the Year, Midnight Berry. This shade exudes richness and complexity with highly saturated purple and deep blue tones, two of the freshest shades for the upcoming year.

To determine the color of the year, the brand partnered with global trend agencies and color experts, making sure the color reflected current hair color trends but also shades in rising demand from clientele. This on-point selection of a shade each year allows Goldwell to  showcase its expertise in creating colors that transform hair into a work of art.

“Drawing inspiration from the enchanting, jewel tone colors found in nature, midnight captures the essence of elegance, allure and a growing desire for glamour,” says Jane Boddy, global color expert. “Its deep, multidimensional hue consists of an inner core of darkness and a rebellious spirit, evoking a sense of mystery and sophistication.”

The infusion of blue undertones and hints of ultraviolet give a new dimension to MIDNIGHT BERRY that spotlights the second big color story of 2024; the rise of tinted blacks. Inspired by the mystery of the midnight sky, MIDNIGHT BERRY portrays a sense of enchantment and mystique that captivates and inspires.

"Midnight berry is a shade that embodies the spirit of the modern woman–confident, daring, and unapologetically unique," says Angelo Seminara, Goldwell global ambassador. "Hair color should be a reflection of one's individuality, and midnight berry offers endless possibilities for self-expression. It's a shade that truly stands out in a crowd."

A Collective of Color

Furthering its continual support and and empowerment of stylists, Goldwell assembled a dream team of stylist creatives in 2023 with its introduction of the Color Collective.

This global hair color community was created to bring together some of the most inspiring and talented creators in global hair color for content partnerships, global social media events, collaborative projects and more. In addition to gaining a new global stage for their work, creators chosen for the Color Collective gain exposure across Goldwell social media channels, have early access to Goldwell updates and are able to test new products prior to launch. They were also recognized onstage at the KAO Salon Global Experience, in Chicago during 2023, and participated in an exclusive session with Goldwell’s global ambassador, Angelo Seminara. Furthering its continual support and and empowerment of stylists, Goldwell assembled a dream team of stylist creatives in 2023 with its introduction of the Color Collective.Furthering its continual support and and empowerment of stylists, Goldwell assembled a dream team of stylist creatives in 2023 with its introduction of the Color Collective.Courtesy of Goldwell
