Trend Report: Tippi Shorter at Aveda Congress 2013

Aveda Artistic Director for Textured Hair, Tippi Shorter, found inspiration from her own nomadic lifestyle in order to create the travel-weathered, windblown textures at her presentation, Nomad: Aveda Congress 2013. The looks ranged from wash-and-go hair to sets to blow dry finishes. As one of the most sought-after textured hair experts in the beauty and entertainment industries, Shorter and her all-star team of stylists used the show to highlight how to transform curly, wavy and cooly hair into a series of perfectly-crafted textures.

According to Shorter, "the show is a celebration of texture… some women have beautiful natural texture that they can just wash and go, but some textures… need to be reshaped and defined using Aveda's amazing hair styling products."

On stage, Shorter featured a flat twist set that tamed unruly curls in need of more definition. Hair was twisted in small sections from crown to ends and set with Aveda Be Curly™ products in order to create sculpted curls that can be worn twisted on day one, and untwisted on the following days, allowing for ultimate hair styling versatility.

Here, Shorter provides the how-to for perfectly textured hair:

Step 1: Shampoo and condition the hair with Be Curly™ Shampoo and Be Curly™ Conditioner.

Step 2: Apply Be Curly™ Style-Prep™ to damp hair, and gently detangle the curls.

Step 3: Working section by section, apply Be Curly™ Curl Controller and Phomollient™ Styling Foam to each section, and create a traveling twist that lays flat against the head, starting at the crown and twisting to the ends. The size of the section depends on the desired curl size. Continue until all the hair is twisted from crown to ends. For looser curls that need firmer shaping at the ends, roll and secure the ends on perm rods.

Step 4: Place the hair under a hooded dryer for 30–40 minutes until completely dry.

Step 5: Untwist the curls. Emulsify 3–4 drops of Dry Remedy™ Daily Moisturizing Oil (available 2014) in your hands, and work the oil through the hair, starting at the ends and moving toward the crown. Manipulate the curls with your hands until you achieve the desired shape.

TEXTURE TIP: This flat twist set works great on fringe. Instead of straightening fringe, include it in the flat twist set for maximum texture.
