  • big mohawk braid hair style

A gorgeous way to show off hair color, add interest to an updo, or simply provide that extra finishing touch to an everyday client, braids were huge this year. Whether big and bold, loose and textured, or intricate and edgy, this hugely popular style was everywhere.

  • effortless updo hair style and dark makeup
    Effortless Hair

Tousled waves, haphazard topknots, lived-in curls — “effortless” hair was all about creating that “woke up like this” vibe. The look, as stylists know, wasn’t actually effortless, but the results were carefree, casual and perfectly imperfect.

  • purple hair top knot style with undercut design

Edgy went mainstream this year as more and more clients embraced the undercut. Graphic designs and clean, sharp lines led the way for cool etched styles. Versatile and stylish, the look could easily be hidden at the nape for more low-key clients, or prominently displayed on the side for the bold and beautiful.

  • silver gray hair color with fishtail braid hairstyle on long hair
    Half-Up Hair

Thanks to its ability to flawlessly show off well-executed hair color, half-up hair quickly became one of the year’s most popular style trends. Whether pulled back into a simple pony, or crafted into more intricate braids or buns, half-up styles were the ideal way to showcase one of 2016’s most popular hair color trends: natural-looking fashion colors.

  • rose blush pink hair color on medium hair with wavy hairstyle
    Next-Day Waves

Another style that seemed to be everywhere in 2016? Tousled, textured, totally enviable waves. The look was all about creating a “fresh-off-the-beach” vibe that was less prim and proper, and more effortlessly beautiful. The insanely popular look, ideal for showcasing gorgeous color, served as a base for tons of other styles, adorning the heads of short- and long-haired clients alike.

  • short blunt bob on straight hair with blue haircolor
    The Bob

2015’s favorite hair cut, the lob, went even shorter this year. The classic bob had a major comeback in 2016, topping such famous heads as Rihanna, Rachel McAdams, Kristen Stewart, Jennifer Lawrence and Beyoncé, to name a few. With a nod to another major trend, individuality, the popular cut was worn every which way from wavy to straight, piece-y to blunt, and tousled to sleek.

  • romantic wedding updo hairstyle for long hair
    Artsy Updos

Loose, romantic updos, while still popular among the bridal and prom crowds, took a backseat to more intricate, avant-garde styles this year. The 2016 way to do these looks was all about soft structure — nothing too harsh — and precise techniques. The end result? Artsy, next-level updos any client could pull off.

  • long straight hair style with long layers
    Straight Strands

Even as lived-in waves soared in popularity this year, stick-straight strands started to make a comeback. Paired with minimal (if any) long layers, and typically worn by long-haired clients, the style was the perfect way to show off seamless color melting and gorgeous blends.

  • rainbow pastel pink hair color with silver hair accessory on medium hair

Thanks in part to Fashion Week’s Spring/Summer 2017 runways, hair accessories got a major boost in popularity this year. Unlike the scrunchies and butterfly clips of decades past, accessories were chic and sophisticated, even avant-garde (think: hair foiling and iron-in accessories), adding a touch of metallic shimmer to everyday styles.

  • khloe kardashian long straight ponytail hair style
    Sleek Ponytails

Goodbye tousled pony, hello sleek styles! Often low, blunt, and accompanied by unexpected accessories, ponytails got a cool-girl upgrade in 2016 thanks to celebs like Priyanka Chopra and Khloe Kardashian. Ultra shiny and super smooth, the style was equal parts cool and carefree.

  • rainbow color natural hair styles for curly textured hair
    Natural Texture

Our favorite hair style trend of 2016? Natural texture! What’s not to love about a trend that encourages clients to embrace the locks they were born with and gives power to the idea of individuality? Stylists everywhere helped clients find the best shapes, the coolest cuts and the most fun colors for their specific hair texture this past year — and the results were gorgeous. Nothing was off limits, no matter the texture, meaning clients had the freedom to be themselves — and that’s a trend we can certainly get behind!
