Portfolio: Joico Presents Vivienne Mackinder’s Yin Yang Collection

Hairstylist Vivienne Mackinder was recently inspired by Chinese philosophy — specifically the idea of the Yin and the Yang, or the feminine and the masculine — when creating her latest hair collection. Alongside famed hair and beauty photographer Roberto Ligresti and Joico Colorist Gion Vincent on the job for color, Vivienne created a unique editorial collection that brings opposites together. The Yin Yang Collection reveals how seemingly contrary forces may actually be complementary or interconnected. Light and dark, fire and water, expansion versus contraction — these are perceivable or tangible dualities that inspired this collection.

  • green dip dyed blonde hair color on long straight hair
    Look One: Peacock Green Waterfall

INSPIRATION: “An inspired, edgy, red-carpet look that mixes a classic style with a little bit of drama,” says Vivienne. “A ponytail is popular on the runway and red carpet, and as great as this classic is, I wanted to take the ponytail to the next level. Thus, the waterfall effect.

    GET THE LOOK:

    1. “The hair was prepared with Joico Power Whip and blow-dried smooth, then dressed into a classic French twist,” says Vivienne.
    2. “A hair piece was then added to the model’s hair to cascade into a waterfall effect.
    3. “The remaining front of the hair was smoothed and connected into the waterfall.
    4. “Joico Power Spray was used to finish the look.”

    COLOR:

    1. Natural Level 6
    2. Root Application: equal parts Joico Crème Lightener + 20 Vol.(process 45 minutes).

    3. “I used Heat Set Blowout Perfecting Crème to smooth the ponytail extensions.
    4. “I then attached the fringe and added the ‘hair ball accessories.’
    5. “For the final touch and finish, use Joico Power Spray to lock the shape into place. PS – this was the hardest hairstyle of the day!!”

INSPIRATION: “The inspiration here was the Joico Color Intensity Confetti collection,” says Vivienne. “I wanted the hair to cascade with movement. While the entire collection of images was inspired by the idea to create a new type of ponytail, I found my imagination taking off beyond the limitations of a ponytail. (If you look closely at each of the looks in the ‘Yang’ part of this collection, you will see I have a ponytail base.)”

    GET THE LOOK:

    1. “After Gion completed with coloring the hair wefts (we used every color in the Color Intensity Confetti line in this hairpiece), I styled and razor-cut each weft,” says Vivienne.
