Olympic Style by Wella Professionals

This year, Wella Professionals will be creating a full-service hair salon at the P&G Family Home for the Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia, situated in the Olympic Park. Building on the success of Wella's activity at The London 2012 Olympic Games, the brand will be selecting 12 top colorists and stylists from around the world who will travel to Sochi to be part of an elite team providing hair services to beautify athletes and their families.

The 12 Wella stylists are a part of Wella and P&G's inspirational "Thank you, Mom" campaign. They will be extending their expert color services, styling and hair treatments to the athletes taking part in The Winter Games as well as their biggest supporters, their moms.

In anticipation of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, some of the selected stylists have created hairstyles inspired by one of the sports represented in the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games. Take a look at these stunning styles as well as insights and tips from the stylists who created each look.

Skiing by Diana Simonyan, Russia
Says Simonyan, "I am very glad to participate in Olympic activity and I am happy that The Winter Games will take place in Sochi in 2014 - this has given me a lot of inspiration! I would like to show the crystal beauty of Russian winter and the unpredictable and surprising Russian soul. I created a style that expresses motion and the will to move forward, just as in Skiing."

Step 1: "The base color of the model was at level 8/0. I lightened her hair with Blondor and 4% Color Touch emulsion. Then I used Color Touch Relights (00/+06/+18/) with 1.9% Color Touch emulsion."

Step 2: "I selected a triangle of hair on crown and pinned it out of the way, then shortened the hair on the back of the head, starting from the middle and working round to the back. Once I had finished, I cut the hair on the crown by determining the length at the top and then cutting rest to this length."

Step 3: "To finish this look, I used Wella Professionals Velvet Amplifier, Wella Professionals Stay Essential Finishing Spray and Wella Professionals Oil Reflections."

Figure Skating by Tatyana Shuvalova, Russia
Says Shuvalova, "I love the beauty of an ideally smooth surface of ice, and I would like to show this icy shine in glossy hair. I’ve called this style ‘Smooth Chic’. My inspiration is a strong, purposeful, but very elegant and subtle figure skater. Smoothly styled hair reflects the lights when she comes to ice skating arena and beautifully moves with her motion, giving her confidence so she is inspired to win!"

Step 1: "First of all I created glossy texture and improved the quality of the hair to give it a shining effect. I did this with the help of Illumina Color."

Step 2: "Create a volume of the crown zone, fix it with Wella Professionals Stay Essential Finishing Spray and add shine with Wella Professionals Mirror Polish Shine Serum." [pagebreak]
Hockey by Julia Apanovich, Russia
Says Apanovich, "The squared silhouette of the hair cut perfectly suits to brutal image of hockey player. Varnished hair styled from the front to back simulate the urge of the wind and speed."

Step 1: "I added to the shine of the hair with Color Touch 4/0."

Step 2: "Separate the top the crown and then cut the side and back very short. To create the squared form, make horizontal partings when cutting the crown, making the fringe a bit longer than the rest hair."

Step 3: "Finish with Wella Professionals Extra Volume Mousse." [pagebreak]
Snowboarding by Roman Lazarev, Russia
Says Lazarev, "I am very proud to host The Winter Olympics in my country; it is an opportunity to show Russia and Russian people to the world. Women demonstrate power in snowboarding. Beauty, energy, dynamic – that was in my mind when I thought about snowboarding women. But these women also own freedom and grace. Women always want to be beautiful, even after long training sessions. That’s what inspired me to create this style."

Step 1: "Apply Wella Professionals Oil Reflections and Wella Professionals Elastic Energy Mousse on wet hair before drying with a hairdryer."

Step 2: "Use irons to create curls from the middle of the hair length. Then make few a bit chaotic movements to forward to give the curls direction."

Step 3: "Keep front strands straight and fix it with Wella Professionals Stay Firm Finishing Spray." [pagebreak]
Snowboarding by Danny Lozada, Puerto Rico
Says Lozada, "Defying gravity with its twists, turns and tumbles, snowboarding has inspired my look of tumbling curls and bouncy waves that reflect the half pipe where snowboarders will make history."

Step 1: "Blow dry the hair using Wella Professionals Natural Volume Mousse, followed by Wella Professionals Thermal Image Spray to add heat protection against the curling wand."

Step 2: "Separate the hair into large sections and wrap around the curling wand to create large waves."

Step 3: "Using a little Wella Professionals Oil Reflections, gently separate the hair with the fingers to create a more tousled look and finish with a spray of Wella Professionals Stay Firm Finishing Spray." [pagebreak]

Figure Skating and Speed Skating by Fay Linksman, Canada
Says Linksman, "Figure skating and speedskating – two of my favorite winter sports which have inspired my two styles. For one, the structured elegance of a figure skater and for the other a fast, adrenalin-fueled speedskater."

Figure Skating
Step 1: "Wash hair with Wella Professionals Brilliance Shampoo and Conditioner and blow dry smooth. Mist dry hair with Wella Professionals Thermal Image heat protection spray, and create loose curls throughout with a curling iron."

Step 2: "Take a circular section around the head 2-3” in depth, following the hairline. Take another 2” circular section, using the first circle as a guide to keep sections as balanced as possible. Put the remaining circle section at the top of the head in a high ponytail."

Step 3: "Starting at the back of the section closest to the ponytail, create an inverted French braid around the head using Wella Professionals Smooth Brilliance Pomade to control fly-aways. Take the ends from the first braid and incorporate into a second inverted braid, smoothing hair back from hairline. Only pick up hair from the hairline side of the braid, and create the second braid as close to the first as possible. When finished, use pins to hide the ends."

Step 4: "To create the bun, split the ponytail into 4 equal sections and backcomb the underside of each section.  Create 4 equal sized loops and pin in place, letting ends flow free. Using your hands, widen the ribbons to round out the bun and pin in place. Wrap the ends around the base of the bun, tucking ends under. Finish with Wella Professionals Stay Firm Finishing Spray."

Speedskating
Step 1: "Wash hair with Wella Professionals Enrich Volumizing Shampoo and Moisturizing Conditioner to build volume. Apply 2-3 pumps of Wella Professionals Velvet Amplifier through damp hair and blow dry smooth, directing away from face."

Step 2: "Take a teardrop shaped section from the front hairline to the crown and clip away and put the remaining hair in a high ponytail using Wella Professionals Smooth Brilliance Shine Pomade to smooth fly-aways."

Step 3: "Lightly mist Wella Professionals Stay Essential Finishing Spray on each section of hair as you crimp the ponytail with a Sebastian Professional micro-crimping iron. Then curl the crimped ponytail with a 1” curling iron.  Split the ponytail horizontally into 2 sections. Back brush the bottom section, and create a cone shaped bun, pinning securely into place. Back brush the top ponytail section, and wrap around the cone to build the shape, letting the ends flow free."

Step 4: "Take the front teardrop section and split horizontally in 2. The section closest to the ponytail is crimped and then curled using same technique as before, while the front section is only curled on the ends. Gently back brush entire section and smooth back and away from face, pinning the hair over the bun. Finish style with Wella Professionals Stay Firm Finishing Spray and Wella Professionals Mirror Polish Shine Serum to keep hair in place with a high gloss shine."
