Estheticians just want a handful of skin care treatment products that can take care of a large variety of skin types. The reality is the more items we have in our treatment cabinet the greater the chance we will forget what is in the back. Those products get old and about a year or two later we wonder why didn’t we use it up. Hundreds of dollars go to waste each year with products not used. We have four must-have protocols that use several key products to do many jobs. For more detailed protocols visit https://aestheticbackbar.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/protocols.pdf.

Signature Facial for All Skin Types
- Double cleanse with a cleansing gel or cream cleanser
- Tone skin with a skin balancing toner or appropriate toner
- Exfoliate with a soft scrub. We recommend a scrub made with jojoba beads.
- Here you can do microdermabrasion, dermaplaning, skin scrubber or any other machine or type of technique for exfoliation. Or you can just skip this step.
- Apply thin layer of Papaya & Pineapple Enzyme Mask. Use with steamer or hot towel compress. Leave on for five to 10 minutes depending on skin type and rinse.
- A hydrating hand massage is nice while they steam.
- Apply a hydrating mask and take the time to massage the neck and shoulders for extra pampering. (Can apply hot towel compress with the hydrating mask.) Leave on for five to 10 minutes.
- Apply a treatment eye cream and here you can do a relaxing eye massage.
- Apply the appropriate treatment serum and, depending on the skin type, you can do a light relaxing facial massage. (*Optional: Can penetrate with skin scrubber or ultrasonic machine.)
- Moisturize with appropriate moisturizer.
- Apply sun protection.
Brightening and Anti-Aging with Pumpkin Enzymes – All Skin Types
- Double cleanse with a cleansing gel
- Tone skin with an AHA toner
- Exfoliate gently with a soft scrub. We recommend a scrub made with jojoba beads.
- Apply a thin layer of a pumpkin enzyme mask. We have two masks: Mask I has 5% glycolic and Mask II contains 12% glycolic. As you apply the mask, tell your client they will feel a little itchy or tingly feeling. It usually lasts about a minute or two and then subsides. If the client says the mask feels like it is burning, remove the mask with water. I would NOT apply steam or hot towel compress with this mask because it may intensify the treatment too much. Leave on for three to 10 minutes depending on skin type and condition. Rinse until the skin does not feel any itchiness or burning.
- Soothe with an aloe-based mask or gel. Good ones to try are Aloe Gel, Cucumber Gel, Lavender Gel or Anti-Aging Gel.
- Apply a treatment eye cream and here you can do a relaxing eye massage.
- Apply treatment serum and, depending on the skin type, you can do a light, relaxing facial massage. (A serum with niacinamide or one in an aloe base is nice to apply here.)
- Moisturize with appropriate moisturizer (choose one without AHAs or intense ingredients).
- Apply sun protection. (Make sure your client goes home with a good sunscreen.
Adjust the facial protocol to your client’s skin type and sensitivity. Recommended protocols are designed to give you an idea of where to use products in your treatment room.
Clarifying & Purifying Treatment - For Oily, Combination and Acne-Prone Skin types
- Double cleanse with a clarifying cleanser
- Tone skin with an AHA Toner
- Apply Clarifying Mask (can apply with steam or hot towel compress). Leave on for five to 10 minutes.
- A hydrating hand massage is nice while they steam.
- Here you can do microdermabrasion, dermaplaning, skin scrubber or any other machine or type of technique for exfoliation. Or you can just skip this step.
- Can do extractions here if needed.
- Apply thin layer of Papaya & Pineapple Enzyme Mask. Use with steamer or hot towel compress. Leave on for five to 10 minutes depending on skin type and rinse.
- Massage lotion to neck, shoulders and upper back.
- Apply a light treatment eye cream and here you can do a relaxing eye massage.
- Apply a clarifying treatment serum (*Optional: Can penetrate with skin scrubber or ultrasonic machine).
- Apply light moisturizer for normal or combination skin. For acne-prone skin types, leave a clarifying serum or an aloe-based gel as a moisturizer, depending on the skin.
- Apply sun protection. (Make sure your client goes home with a good sunscreen.)
Sensitive Facial Treatment - All Skin Types & Especially Sensitive Skin Types
- Double cleanse with a cleansing gel or cream cleanser
- Tone skin with a lavender toner or sensitive toner
- To exfoliate the skin apply thin layer of an enzyme mask. (Use with steamer or hot towel compress. Can apply drops of lavender essential oil in towels.) Most sensitive skin types can tolerate a gentle enzyme, but if it feels too tingly just rinse it off. If client has issues with redness, omit the heat portion.
- Massage a lavender lotion on hands while mask is on.
- Leave on for three to 10 minutes depending on skin type and rinse.
- To soothe, apply a lavender gel or aloe-based calming mask (can apply hot towel compress if client doesn’t have issues with redness). Leave on for five to 10 minutes.
- Massage lavender lotion into neck, shoulders and upper back.
- Apply a treatment eye cream and here you can do a relaxing eye massage.
- For combination or oily skin types you can apply a dime size of a lavender gel or aloe gel and use as a moisturizer. If skin is more normal to dry, apply a treatment serum with niacinamide or a soothing serum. (*Optional: Can penetrate with skin scrubber or ultrasonic machine.)
- Moisturize with an appropriate cream for their skin type.
- Apply sun protection. (Make sure your client goes home with a good sunscreen.)
Some states have restrictions on use of microdermabrasion, dermaplaning, acids and other products or gadgets. These are just examples; make the decision of what is right your client. Adjust the facial protocol to your client’s skin type and sensitivity. Recommended protocols are designed to give you an idea of where to use products in your treatment room.
