The grand opening for Jon Reyman’s Spoke and Weal salon took place on Thursday, May 21st in NYC’s Soho. The salon is Reyman’s first outpost in New York, but the third Spoke and Weal nationally; his San Francisco Russian Hill location opened in 2013, followed closely by LA’s West Hollywood base in 2014. Opening three salons in three years is an endeavor that might have anyone reeling, but Jon and his Operations Director, Liz Norton seem to thrive off of the bustle, taking it in stride. When Norton is asked about any future locations, she hints at going somewhere a little bit off the beaten path, saying, “I’d love to do cities with a little more access in terms of capital, and newer economic development.” In spite of all these locations, Jon travels often enough that he is able to frequent each salon; he will be a definite fixture in Soho.
It comes as no surprise that Reyman, the former Artistic Director of the Aveda Advanced Academy in New York, will train all his instructors in-house and also offer an education program to teach stylists from external salons. The salon exclusively features products from Aveda, reminding clients of his intensive knowledge and support of the brand. Spoke and Weal’s staff roster is impressive, and includes Christine Thompson, Color Director and expert in natural, plant derived hair care; Clay Nielsen, Guest Artist (who will work Thursday nights) known for his editorial work, as well as being stylist to James Franco and Emma Roberts; and Peter Corvington, Master Stylist and Colorist, as well as Aveda alum.
Spoke and Weal’s grand opening was well attended and lasted well into the night. Guests included model Ashley Smith with The Society Management, and Nadia Sarwar, known for the popular style and photography blog “FrouFouu.” Aaron Aanenson spinned House music for attendees; who were treated to an elaborate platter of fruits, nuts, and regular, as well as vegan, cheese. Tutela Prosecco, Beluga Vodka, and Barr Hill Gin were served and mixed with Kombucha, adding a healthy twist to the cocktails. The opening was definitely a success, with Reyman taking the time to thank everyone for coming and for all the hard work that went into making the opening so flawless. Now that Spoke and Weal is open on the East Coast, NY fashionistas can enjoy a haircut unlike any other, with the one and only Jon Reyman and his master team. -Emilie Branch
