Long before Emilio Pucci and Richard Tyler designed fashionable gear for flight attendants, aviator Harriet Quimby donned a dramatic royal purple flight suit of her own design. Quimby, the first American woman to become a licensed pilot and fly across the English Channel, had a flair for the dramatic, not to mention a die-hard, go-getter spirit that catapulted her light-years ahead of her contemporaries.

It’s Quimby’s panache, style and thrill-seeking legacy that designer Alvin Valley captures in his fall showing during Los Angeles Fashion Week. Turning out a neutral-based collection of Katharine Hepburn-worthy slacks paired with carefully fitted blouses bursting with brilliant jewel tones, Valley’s wares emote the essence of a bygone era when women achieved countless firsts in all walks of life.

Focusing on both Quimby’s strength and style, Nioxin lead stylist Donna Maggi creates what she calls real “Hollywood hair” by modernizing the traditional jaw-grazing bob with flapper-esque finger waves that boast a just-flown-in-the-wind look. Maggi pinned up long tresses to create a faux bob, leaving some pieces loose to accent the face, while models with short strands had select pieces of hair pinned down to create texture and unexpected dimension in the loose finger waves. Says Maggi, “The intentional imperfectness of this look makes it very fresh and perfect for today!”
