Internationally renowned designer Sue Wong hit all the right notes with the recent unveiling of her swinging "Jazz Babies" Spring 2014 Collection. The event, which took place at the Cicada Club in Los Angeles, revealed a collection that features a greatest hits list of trends, including polka dots in a variety of colors, intricately embroidered bodices, and an array of day-to-evening pieces in beautifully muted shades of lilac, pink, black and beige.
The event itself was an exclusive and glamourous, invite-only affair, packed with fashion and entertainment industry insiders. Attendees dressed in 1920's-inspired finery to complement the collection's theme, while the elegant, art deco club served as a fitting backdrop. Gracing the event were actresses Kelly Hu (CW’s Arrow, The Vampire Diaries), Breann Johnson (Red Wing), Sloane Avery (MTV’s Teen Wolf), Sarah Dumont (Don Jon, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), Erin Cahill (ABC’s Body of Proof), Lindsay Seim (Insidious Chapter 2), and Kaili Thorne (CSI Miami).
According to Sue, the Jazz Babies collection was inspired by the 1920's flappers, or jazz babies, who represented a new age of more powerful women. Sue explains that, “Before then, women were only ever portrayed as an extension of a husband or her parents. From the sparks of rebellion in the way they dressed and expressed themselves, those amazing women pioneered the kind of empowered attitudes and lives we have today.” Among some of her specific inspirations were actress Marie Prevost who spanned a career of over a hundred films from silent to talkies, Paris sensation Josephine Baker, It Girl Clara Bow, film star and accomplished businesswoman, Norma Talmadge, and Anita Loos who was an author, screenwriter and playwright of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, which featured a flapper as the protagonist. To emanate the power and beauty of these icons, Sue crafted a collection that is "strong, vibrant and fabulous."
The hairstyles featured in this collection followed suit with a very 1920's feel. According to Nicole Hartman, hair stylist for one of the event's primary sponsors, Privé Hair,"The inspiration behind the Sue Wong style is definitely a very classic 20s look: pin curls and waves that are very small and tight and almost have a wet look to it - with head pieces and feathers that just look amazing with this hairstyle!" The overall effect is both glamorous and exciting, an echo of the Roaring Twenties.
