Spring is in the HAIR

When planning our education - whether it be digital, online or show/classes - and when creating mood boards for editorial shoots, it’s always an inspiration to look at what happens on the runways

For spring 2014, we saw windswept updos, mixed textures, gold, ornate ponytails, accessories galore and old world braids.  I know, braids again…but there are so many different kinds of braids, so they’re still fun and fresh. Not to mention, if you take the time to teach your clients how to braid, it’s of great value to them…and you.

These old world braids are full and textured in the front and loosely pulled back into a simple braid or chignon in the back – the braids most people see on the street and want to create at home, but don’t know how (that’s where you come in). The images above are an example of how old world runway braids inspired a consumer look that will most likely be used on our social media outlets (street look), as well as a studio shot we’ll use for editorial.

The beautiful thing about inspiration is there are no boundaries, you can take these spring 2014 trends and make them your own. Put your stamp on them and inspire your clients. Make a commitment to yourself to teach each client something new at every appointment. If you think about it, you really just need to come up with 2-3 tips each month and customize for each client. It could be something as easy as how to use bobby pins correctly, to how to create curls that last, to how to blow dry hair, to braiding.

For easy tips and tricks you can share with clients, check out http://www.samvilla.com/how-to/.  And, if you want to teach clients how to braid so they can be on trend this spring, try the following:

Before braiding, advise to prep hair with Redken iron shape 11 to set and reduce flyaways and finish with Redken control addict 28 high-control hairspray for natural hold. Another cool trick is to texturize the entire head with a texturizing iron to expand the cuticle, this really gives braids staying power. The technique is called Scrimping.

Scrimping:

·       Section hair and spray with Redken iron shape 11 finishing thermal spray to protect hair from heat

·       Randomly tap down the section with a Sam Villa Textur iron – using light to medium compression

·       Repeat until entire head is texturized

·       Braid as usual

·       Finish with Redken control addict 28 high control hairspray for super staying power
