Famed Italian fashion designer Elsa Schiaparelli knew how to throw a party; the rival to Coco Chanel had dalliances in the Surrealist and Dada art movement, often collaborating with the likes of Salvador Dalí and Jean Cocteau. The cast of characters at her parties were eccentric, to say the least, and modern-day designer Anna Sui found inspiration from these decadent gatherings for her Fall/Winter 2017 show. To capture the vibe of “Schiap” in the ’40s, yet keep the look modern, R+Co hair lead Garren takes the era’s iconic look, the victory roll, and re-focuses it with texture on certain girls, while those with short hair receive bowl cuts and still others find their natural curls enhanced and defined. “We’re using a variety of products to achieve the texture we want [for each look],” he says.
To that end, those with the victory roll redux have their hair prepped with R+Co SAIL Soft Wave Spray. After drawing a center part, Garren twists the front section of hair on each side, securing each into what he calls “Minnie Mouse twists.” To lock the style down, he mists OUTER SPACE Flexible Hairspray over the crown. As a final runway-worthy touch, Garren runs TROPHY Shine + Texture Spray from the mid-shaft through the ends to cast gorgeous light and defining texture on the lengths. —Karie L. Frost
