The wave is here to stay, as evidenced at the Cushnie et Ochs NYFW Fall/Winter 2017 show, where Moroccanoil global ambassador Antonio Corral Calero crafts what he calls “undone glamour.” “These waves have broken movement; it looks like she did it herself,” he says. Key to the style is the foundation, which seems counterintuitive to the end result, but Calero swears by: He preps hair with an intense amount of Moroccanoil Treatment. “I’m applying one pump for each two-inch section. It makes the hair sort of greasy, but I want that because it allows me to build the hair up,” he says. Also key: For each curl, he loosely wraps the hair around the iron’s barrel, stretching it along the length of the barrel, and then pulling the hair as he releases it. “This loosens the curl and makes it more relaxed,” he explains. Finally, Calero rakes back the hair from the face, applying Moroccanoil Smoothing Lotion at the roots. “This make the hair stay back, but it doesn’t look wet or heavy,” he says. “I think the hair pulled back off the face makes her look confident, but also takes confidence to wear,” he adds.
Confidence is a tenet of the Cushnie et Ochs girl, and the accompanying makeup typically reads as strong. But for this season’s makeup, Maybelline lead Gato dials it down a notch, giving the girls a more “urban and casual” vibe that keeps with the sophistication of the clothing brand but feels a little easier. Contouring and highlighting gently sculpt the face, setting the stage for a bushy, thick brow—an enduring trend for today’s woman. The current online obsession with wire nail art (check out Unistella salon’s Eun Kyung Park’s handiwork if you want to be amazed) fuels the accompanying nail art. “We wanted to do something that mimics that idea but more simply,” says Christian Louboutin Beauté lead Alicia Torello. A soft nude polish provides the base for a horizontal strip of silver nail art tape, which Torello places on some nails at random distances from the cuticle. As for the shape and length, she laughs, “The girls (designers Carly Cushnie and Michelle Ochs) really like long, stiletto nails. They want them every season!”
