Oscars 2011

We reveal the how-tos for Oscars' hottest hairstyles.

Nicole Kidman:  Celebrity Hairstylist David Babaii wanted to achieve a "Playful Ponytail" with a hint of Bridget Bardot for Nicole Kidman's 2011 Oscar look. David always begins every red carpet look with clean hair followed by applying Couture Colour Pequi Oil Treatment to her entire head. It is derived from the Pequi fruit, known for centuries as the beauty secret of the Amazon Rainforest. Once applied, David is amazed at how Nicole's beautiful red hair color looks so fresh and vibrant. The Pequi Oil Treatment also instantly absorbs leaving hair smooth and shiny.  He then sectioned off a bang and cut a French fringe to frame the face. Next, he blow dried Nicole's hair with the IT&LY HAIRFASHION Ionic Dryer that supplies super-fast drying power along with a large round brush. At the bang area, he gently bumped the ends under.  After the hair was dried, he applied an additional amount of Pequi Oil to create a smooth and shiny surface.  To begin the "Playful Ponytail" up-do, he used his hands to sweep the hair into a ponytail creating a slight bump at the crown and securing with a band. To finish the French fringe, David added additional Pequi Oil to his fingers to define.

Sandra Bullock:  David Babaii created "Texture Infusion" for Sandra Bullock's 2011 Oscar look.  Start with a clean canvas by rinsing all the shampoo and conditioner from the hair. After gently towel drying, David applied Couture Colour Pequi Oil Treatment to the hair, using a wide tooth comb to evenly distribute the product.  The Pequi Oil tames frizz and mends split ends while providing hair with incredible softness and shine. Then, he dried her hair with a round brush for a smooth finish.  Once dry, David applied additional Pequi Oil and  brushed her hair straight back.  With the IT&LY HAIRFASHION Digital Styling Iron, he took random half inch sections starting at the front and twisted the hair.  Once the strand is twisted, take your flat iron and press down the entire length of the strand to set a wavy texture in. Allow each strand to cool and release itself naturally. David continued taking half inch sections throughout the front half of her head until he achieved enough texture. When complete, additional Pequi Oil was added to his hands to finger comb the hair back into a ponytail above the nape area. He then wrapped her hair around the band and secured with bobby pins allowing any loose hairs to fall naturally.

Reese Witherspoon:  Frédéric Fekkai hairstylist Renato Campora channeled the mod spirit of the '60s to perfect this top glamour ‘do. He applied Fekkai Coiff Bouffant Lifting & Texturizing Spray Gel and Fekkai Silky Straight Ironless Smooth Finish Serum as a foundation. Then Campora blow-dried Witherspoon's strands with the Fekkai Large Round Brush to create fullness and volume.  He divided the hair into two sections using a 1 and a half-inch curling iron to create movement and volume on the bottom layer. The roots were teased before setting the look with Fekkai Coiff Sheer Hold Hairspray.

Amy Adams: "The Fighter" actress electrified the 2011 Oscars red carpet in a glittering purple L'Wren Scott cap-sleeve gown, and to add some softness to this high-octane look, celebrity hairstylist Laini Reeves for Couture Colour created a 'do inspired by Jerry Hall with loose, romantic marcel waves and lots of va-va-voom volume. Laini began this red-carpet look with clean, conditioned wet hair. To give Amy's locks a smooth, shiny appearance, and to maintain the vibrancy of her gorgeous copper color, Laini applied three pea-size drops of Couture Pequi Oil Treatment from roots to ends. First, she rubbed the oil between her fingertips to activate the ingredients.  She then parted the hair to the side, and wet-set every piece of hair into 1.5-inch curlers.  Once the hair was fully dry, she removed the curlers and brushed through the hair with a soft bristle brush.  She finished by adding a touch more pequi oil for shine and hairspray for hold.

Makeup artist Molly Stern prepped Adams' skin with Jurlique face spray and Crème de la Mer.  She then mixed La Mer foundation with Josie Maran Argan Skin Illuminzer.  To warm up the star's complexion, she applied Josie Maran Color Stick in Petal Pink and highlighted her cheekbone with NARS Sex Appeal Blush. On the eyes she applied a bright gold in the inner corners of the lid with NARS Soft Touch Shadow Pencil in Hollywood Land and built out the depth with a navy hue by NARS in Bateu Ivre. Stern then lined her lash line with Sue Devitt Eye Intensifier Pencil in Victoria Falls and layered on lots of mascara in dark blue by Beauty Is Life. She finished the look with NARS Velvet Gloss Lip Pencil in Frivolous.

Melissa Leo: To balance out the structured design of the dress, hairstylist Creighton Bowman created a tousled updo to keep Leo's look young and fresh, using products from French hair-care line Leonor Greyl. "I always start on towel-dried hair," says Bowman. "I applied Leonor Greyl Lait Luminescence, a detangling milk, on towel-dried hair -- it's a great, shiny product.  It's good for blow-drying, it's good for creating that soft texture. And then it was very simple: I used their Gel à la Keratine, an alcohol-free styling gel, at her roots to create that lift she has on top. Before I put everything up, it was just a couple of drops of the Serum de Soie Sublimateur, for shine." And to keep that updo uppity for the duration of a long night of celebrating, Bowman reveals his technique: "Keeping it up goes to putting the back up first. You part right across the top of the head from ear to ear and you take that whole back section and really slick it up tight into a high ponytail, then wrap it into a bun. Then you bring the top into it -- that way it still has a loose look, sort of like as if it's not being held up. But because the back is a separate ponytail piece, it sort of holds it really tight and really in place.  Believe it or not, it was one hair tie and then it was four hairpins. That's it."

Gwyneth Paltrow: Gwyneth Paltrow rocked straight, sleek strands that beautifully complemented her slim-fitting gown. Harry Josh, John Frieda international creative consultant, is the man responsible for her lovely look. To achieve it, he started with the new John Frieda Frizz-Ease 3-Day Straight (an at-home alternative to salon straightening treatments) because he wanted Paltrow's strands to stay straight all night long.  Josh began blowing out her hair with a round boar-bristle Mason Pearson brush, straightening each section at a time. Next, he went over each piece with a comb and a flatiron, ensuring every hair stayed sleek. Paltrow's hair was then parted on the side, and Josh combed down all stray hairs and flyaways with John Frieda Full Repair Flyaway Tamer.

Jennifer Lawrence: Best Actress nominee Jennifer Lawrence loves wearing her hair down and she did so with smooth strands that held gorgeous volume and a hint of curl.  Dove celebrity hairstylist Mark Townsend used a dime-size amount of Dove Nourishing Oil Care Serum on damp strands before blowing out her hair in sections with a round brush, then added a hint of styling gel and set it in hot rollers. "I raked through Dove Nourishing Oil Care Leave-in Smoothing Cream after we took out the rollers to make it modern and shiny," says Townsend. "I didn't want it to be an '80s set!" Next, he sprayed Dove Flexible Hold Hairspray with Natural Movement onto a flat brush and ran it through her hair before misting some Dove Heat Defense Therapy Mist on the ends and taking a 2-inch curling iron to shape them slightly. For the finishing touch, Townsend sprayed Lawrence's mane with Dove Extra Hold Hairspray with Natural Movement to keep the look in place.

Natalie Portman: Natalie Portman’s style, courtesy of Frederic Fekkai hairstylist Didier Malige, is a study in contrasts: lush and wavy on one side, sleek and polished on the other. The asymmetry created by the low side part opens up the star’s face just so.  Malige topped off Portman’s style with one of her earrings as a shimmery finishing touch.

Mila Kunis:  Celebrity stylist Mara Roszak, was responsible for Mila Kunis’ stunning romantic updo.  First, apply TRESemmé Naturals Mousse to wet hair and dry it, parting the hair to one side.  With a 1” barrel curling iron, curl your hair away from your face in sections.  Brush out the curled sections of your hair with fingertips and form an “S” wave around the face.  Pull your hair softly into a messy chignon, then spray it all over with TRESemmé Naturals Finishing Spray for a soft-hold finish.

Giuliana Rancic:  Apply Alterna's Bamboo Smooth Kendi Pure Treatment Oil to damp hair and blow-dry straight.  Add additional texture with a 1" iron by wrapping small sections of the hair away from the face to create "beach-like" texture.  Gather the hair into a high ponytail leaving a little height in the front and pulling the sides tighter.  Secure with an elastic band.  Lightly tease the ponytail into a textured poof.  Create a large bun and secure with French bobby pins.  Finish with Alterna's Bamboo Anti-Humidity Hair Spray and follow with Bamboo Smooth Kendi Dry Mist Oil to add extra shine.

Anne Hathaway:  Celebrity Stylist Adir Abergel used FHI Heat styling tools and Fekkai products to create each of Anne Hathaway's looks for the Academy Awards.  Her red carpet look was a modern take of Edwardian influenced style accented with bohemian flair; a soft, loose style with beautiful shine. Begin by parting the hair down the center and apply Fekkai Advanced Full Blown Volume Styling Whip to the hair from root to ends.  Blow-dry the hair using Fekkai Round Brush.  Next pull hair into a low ponytail at the nape of the neck, making sure to cover the ears.  Then twist the ponytail into a loose knot.  The key is keeping it loose for a touch of bohemian flair.  It's almost like a draping around the face with wispy pieces of hair coming out softly.   Finish the look by spraying the Fekkai Coiff Sheer Hold Hairspray.
