NYFW Fall 2013 Hairstyles: Reem Acra

A severe side part, a polished, close-to-the-head silhouette and a sleek, tightly coiled chignon—all finished with a high gloss shine—were the details that went into the glamorously and rogynous look that hair visionary Didier Malige of Art Partner created for the show-stopping Reem Acra Fall 2013 collection.

Noting Pat McGrath’s dramatic make-up punctuated with a velvety, cherry red lip, Didier observed, “With strong makeup, you need clean, yanked-back hair pulled off the face. You don’t hide, you show. Shine is important for the overall look—the aggressive side of the look.”

Backstage, Reem explained, “We show fishnets over layers, over the dresses—even over embroidery. We are taking it to a new level.” Commenting on Didier’s hair artistry—achieved with his legendary talent and René Furterer styling products—the designer noted, “Didier is a master. I love the concept of having everything clean, glowy, shiny. It also has a European twist I’m excited about—just a modern, fabulous, fresh look.”

How Malige Achieved This Look:
After rubbing a small amount of René Furterer VEGETAL Sculpting Gel between the palms of my hands, I smooth my palms over the model’s hair at the crown, and then comb it through to distribute the gel evenly. This gives hair a beautiful wet sheen. After combing, I apply a little more, again combing it through.

Next, the rest of the hair is gently pulled back to cover the tops of the ears and gathered into a low ponytail. I secure the ponytail with a bungee cord and tuck in Japanese straight pins to anchor the bottom edge of the hair around the ponytail to keep it neat.

To help build shine, I lightly mist the ponytail with René Furterer FIORAVANTI shine enhancing detangling spray – no rinse. I apply generous amounts of René Furterer VEGETAL SCULPTING GEL, working it through the ponytail.

Next, I twist the entire length of the ponytail, lift the twisted ponytoil and wrap it into a tightly coiled chignon at the nape of the neck. To hold the chignon in place I slip in Japanese straight pins. Then I add a light touch of the VEGETAL SCULPTING GEL, which I tap on the edges of the chignon with my fingertips

For a high shine finish and to keep the hair looking slick throughout the show, I spray hair all over with a lot of René Furterer GLOSSING SPRAY. I like this product because it comes out in a very fine mist. Last, I finesse the smoothness of the hair around the face and at the crown and sides by taking a Japanese straight pin and using the ends to very lightly “comb” it through the hair.
