NYFW Fall 2013 Hairstyles: Catherine Malandrino

Known for infusing a New York edge with Parisian elegance, Catherine Malandrino delivered a stunning collection for Fall 2013. Le Normandie—inspired by the clean lines and formal elegance mastered by Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann, who led the French Art Deco furniture design movement in the 1920s and ‘30s.

“The collection is about an elongated silhouette and simplicity of design,” said Malandrino. The designer also emphasized the importance of the fabrics, particularly satin, with its lustrous sheen. From a long pour of burgundy and midnight blue silk crepe satin dress to a long ribbon embroidery dress, the fluid lines of Malandrino’s designs were echoed in the fluid lines of the simply sophisticated hair looks created by hairstyling visionary Didier Malige of Art Partner, who led the hairstyling team. This synergy led Malandrino to say, “Didier is the perfect fit for this collection!”

Working exclusively with products from René Furterer’s styling collection, Didier interpreted Catherine Malandrino’s vision with what he described as “clean hair with texture.”

“We also look at the fabric in the collection, the shine of satin,” said Didier.

The beautiful result: a straight-down-the-middle part, a sleek crown and a controlled yet sensuous, satiny spill over the shoulders in back. The goal was to keep hair pristine throughout the entire presentation.

How to Get This Look:

Before blow-drying, spray hair in sections from roots to ends with René Furterer VOLUMEA volumizing conditioning spray. If hair is curly, try René Furterer FIORAVANTI shine enhancing detangling spray –do not rinse. Comb hair through carefully to distribute product evenly

You are making hair very close to the head with a very even, precise part. Using a fine-tooth comb, make a clean part down the middle. The part is very deep and centered.

Next, blow out out the hair, using a dryer with a nozzle attachment and either a Mason Pearson paddle brush for straighter hair, or a round brush for hair with more wave and curl. Pull hair to a taut to achieve a smooth finish and straight lines.

Once hair is dry, tuck behind the ears with a fine-tooth comb to keep the hair super neat. Apply very small amount of René Furterer STYLING WAX, rub it between palms of hands and smooth if over the surface of the hair from the part to the top of the ear. This will give you shine that will last, and will keep hair close to the head.

To make hair tighter, preventing it from separating in back, make a vertical part in back, halfway down the head and clip off each section. Taking the loose hair underneath, gather it into a ponytail and secure it with an elastic band, wrapping a section of the ponytail around the elastic. Then unclip hair to fall over the ponytail. Making this hidden ponytail has the same effect as an undercut. It reduces fullness and gives hair more of a line.

For the sleekest line, carefully flat-iron the lengths of the hair. A light misting of René Furterer VEGETAL FINISHING SPRAY tames any flyaways so hair is really smooth. For extra shine try René Furterer GLOSSING SPRAY.
