Beauty and the Best
The stars aligned for the Intercoiffure America • Canada (ICA) Spring Beauty Symposium, held June 10 to 11 at the Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Vidal Sassoon Team, led by Stephen Moody, general manager of North American education, started the event with a big bang, introducing the Sassoon Neon Blitz collection. Dazzling the glitterati, the Sassoon team saw models strutting their stuff wearing several neo-bobs decorated with luscious color confections, such as opaque garnet with subtle bits of green and turquoise that would make even a peacock proud.
At the cocktail reception, “Visionary of the Year” Award was presented to Redken founder Paula Kent Meehan, who took the stage and shared her personal journey that included dropping out of school at 15 years of age and having her first child at 16. She told Intercoiffure members how she went back to school to learn how to manage her growing product concern, and how determination and luck had been on her side when forging a new business model for the professional beauty industry. And how’s this for success: Meehan currently lives in Elvis Presley’s former Los Angeles home!
Spearheaded by ICA president Lois Christie and members of the Executive Committee, and hosted by industry-great Geno Stamporo, the Spring Symposium also brought presentations by industry gurus Yves Durif--Straight to the Point French haircutting techniques sponsored by Profound Beauty; Bradford Vinson and Josslyn Thompson’s Beyond the Color Wheel for Logics; and Scott Cole and the Graham Webb Team’s Into the Woods color collections to enthusiastic audiences. Intercoiffure Nouveau, showcasing new talent in Intercoiffure salons, was also showcased. Wella, Nioxin, Logics, Paul Mitchell, Your Name, Profound Beauty, Aveda and L’Oréal Professionnel sponsored the fast-pace symposium.

Going for the Goldwell
Beauty pros were over the moon in Miami recently thanks to RUSH artistic team members Andrew “Andy” Heasman, international artistic director, and Dimitri Loizi, international educational director, who led-off the Goldwell 2007 Symposium. Heasman charmed audiences with his onstage charisma, while the more low-key Loizi stuck to his styling guns to produce perfect haircuts. Even so, Goldwell North American Guest Artists (NAGAs) John Simpson and Thomas Dewing nearly stole the show. Highlighting the new Goldwell “Switch” collection to its absolute best advantage, the NAGA team’s color interpretations ranged from brunettes with touches of hot copper, to multidimensional blondes with subtle bits of egg yolk yellow, garnet and warmest gold.
Held at the posh Doral Golf Resort & Spa, owners, colorists and cutters were treated to business, haircutting and haircoloring classes, as well as an informative discussion about Goldwell products. The entire event provided plenty of networking and playtime during hosted meals, a trip to South Beach for merrymaking and shopping and an Awards party with a Roaring Twenties theme. Equally fun, the RUSH and NAGA members partied the night away, giving everyone a one-on-one chance to rub elbows with these amazing chaps.
As part of this year’s symposium, Gold Star Awards were presented to Goldwell’s full-time and part-time field educators who went above and beyond the required amount of educational activities such as promotional events and regional shows. Full-time winners included Marge Binner and Thomas McWilliams (193 activities each). Goldwell Technical Associate Gold Star Winners included Daniel Brehm (202 activities) and Davin Dawson (163 activities). Way to go!

Upfront with Vavoom
From Hollywood to Broadway, Matrix’s Vavoom continues to bask in the limelight. Teaming up with Entertainment Weekly, Vavoom hosted the second annual ABC Upfront Fall TV Preview Party at the Box in New York City. Heroes starlet Hayden Panettiere, Sara Ramirez of Grey’s Anatomy and Eva Longoria of Desperate Housewives joined stylist and salon owner Gary Noble, of the Noble Salon in Stamford, Connecticut, and Noble stylist Maureen Clark for a night packed with TV pilot chatter and charity. After walking the Vavoom Red Carpet, celebrities posed for Portraits for a Cause in the Vavoom Sketching Room to benefit the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric Aids Foundation. Plus, every lucky attendee received Vavoom’s Gold Heat styling line. “Our year of Vavoom initiatives have shown stylists and salon clients that the everyday glamour inspired by today’s celebrities is achievable with Vavoom,” says Deborah Marquardt, vice president of Matrix Communications. “These initiatives have created tremendous buzz and excitement behind the brand.”

Beauty Leaders, Unite!
They went to the same beauty school in Queens, New York. They lived and worked just blocks from one another. But these ladies had never met—until recently. “We were introduced at an industry party a few years ago,” explains Lois Christie, president of Intercoiffure and owner of Christie & Co. Salon • Spa in Flushing, New York, referring to Lydia Sarfati, founder and CEO of Repêchage. “Once we started talking about our roots and where we began our careers, we uncovered quite a phenomenal connection, both personally and professionally.” Today, these women are powerhouses in their respective fields and have come together to launch the Repêchage Spa De Beauté at Christie & Co. Salon • Spa.
When Christie opened her salon in 1970, she employed just four hairdressers. Now she enjoys more than 70 people in a space encompassing over 8,000 square feet. During this time, her estheticians used private label products, but Christie decided recently to make the switch to Repêchage because of its consistency of education and standards, not to mention the product’s global reputation. “The fact that Repêchage has a certification program for estheticians is important to me; it also sends an important message to our clients,” says Christie. (FYI: The Repêchage team spent six weeks training and certifying the Christie & Co. staff!)
Sarfati was on hand for the grand opening cocktail reception and ribbon-cutting ceremony, and was invited by Christie to make a presentation for the 60 guests in attendance. With their mutual respect and passion for the industry plus their commitment to setting educational standards, Christie and Sarfati serve as wonderful role models for women in business and for the beauty industry as a whole.
