Eryn Harrison, owner of Calm, A Salon, recently hosted the second annual Mother/Daughter Braiding Party to help raise funds for Piedmont and Corpus Christi elementary schools. The two-part event, held on September 20th and October 11th, was successful in raising over $1,100 in ticket sales. Harrison will also be donating $786 from retail sales to the local schools. Beach, Havens and Wildwood Elementary monies will go to support vital programs from math to library activities to help enrich the children's educational experiences. Funds raised for Corpus Christi will go for tuition assistance.
"This event is not only teaching hair and braiding techniques, it also gives busy moms and daughters an opportunity to spend time together and appreciate one another, which sometimes gets lost in our busy schedules," says Eryn.
Eryn, assisted by her talented staff who all graciously volunteered their time, began the event by teaching some of the basics of haircare before going on to several popular styles and braiding techniques, including the classic French braid. She also encouraged daughters to be patient with mom learning a new skill and not to ask her try one of the new techniques right before school. Instead, Eryn highly suggests practicing on weekends and advised the daughters to be patient. "This always alleviates frustration by both moms and daughters and assures the daughter [that] the outcome is going to be as pretty as she hopes by giving mom time to practice without the pressure of having to get it right," explains Eryn, mother of two daughters herself, Ava, 9 and a 4th grader at Corpus Christi and Tatum, 18, a freshman at Pace University in Manhattan.
Eryn Harrison, a stylist for 18 years, began her career in the beauty industry working after school at The Beauty Center in her hometown of Oakland, CA. She spent her early career as a stylist at the Hair Tailor, a prestigious salon in Montclair Village (Oakland) where she was promoted into management by age 23.
