Halloween How To: Cinderella Pumpkin by Joi Rooks

For artists such as hairstylists, unique characteristics of the changing seasons are very inspiring, as well as everything they come in contact during those seasons – it can all evoke a feeling or design. Sometimes it’s very obvious, like translating foliage colors into hair color, and other times it’s something that just comes to mind and makes sense, as this Cinderella Pumpkin look did for Joi Rooks, owner of fresche salon in Atlanta, GA.  She was inspired by iconic Cinderella Pumpkins for the shape, texture and color, which has unique placement in that it is all within the interior: blood orange and cranberry.

“I look for inspiration during show season or a photo shoot, everywhere except in actual hair. Being inspired by shapes, texture, design and color can be found in so many places in life… knowing how and when to translate that into hair is the challenge,” she explains.

Color
Natural dark brown hair was accented with splices that popped from inside to expose color when the design was created.

1. Create V-shaped panels on sides and back, keeping it below the round of the head and then pre-lighten to about a level 8 with Goldwell Oxycur Platin lightening powder and 30 volume to pre-lighten.

2. Goldwell Topchic 7 OO and 10 volume was used for the Blood Orange and 6 RV 6 RR and 10 volume for the Cranberry.

3. Process, shampoo and apply Elumen KK@all and RR@all at the basin.

Style
1. Create texture by micro crimping with KMS FREE SHAPE 2 in 1 styling + finishing spray.

2. Brush out each panel and roll up and pin sections to create shape of Cinderella Pumpkin - by lifting/rolling the hair up, the beautiful color is exposed.

"This look is not only beautiful for a special occasion, it could actually be used as the basis for a Halloween costume," says Patrick McIvor, Artistic and TechniCulture Director for Goldwell and KMS California. "Start with statement hair and build from there! Not to mention, posting a Pinterest board of seasonally inspired hair is a great way to advertise your work and promote seasonal changes with guests."
