Hair Color How To: Pastel Blue Mermaid by Amber Yancey

Hairstylist Amber Yancey recently created this pretty, pastel blue mermaid hair for her guest. Deep cobalt and indigo complement lighter shades of turquoise and ultramarine for a stunning, multidimensional effect. Below, Amber shares the formulas she used to create this gorgeous look.

Says Amber, "My client was already pre-lightened all over to a level 10 blonde. I first applied Joico's Semi-Permanent K Pack Color Intensity in Sapphire Blue to the roots about two inches out.

"Then, I started at the back of the head at the base of the neck and worked my way up, taking 1-inch to 2-inch sections and alternating color combinations. Starting from where the Sapphire Blue ended, I feathered the next color into the blue and about 3 to 4 inches down the mid-shaft of the hair, then feathered a light pastel shade to the remaining length of the hair. Joico K Pack Color Intensity in Purple, Light Purple and Cobalt Blue were used, mostly at the mid-shaft of the hair, blending into PRAVANA Pastel in Blissful Blue and Lilac. PRAVANA Sliver was also used. I alternated color combinations every section.

"When I got to the top section where [the client's] hair was parted, I used the lighter pastel shades and Sliver, blending into the Sapphire Blue 3 to 4 inches down the mid-shaft into Joico's Purple, Light Purple or Cobalt Blue to give a kind of soft glow/translucent effect, like a mermaid or opal.

"Process time: 25/30 minutes; for richer, darker colors: 45 minutes. For richer, longer lasting color, apply heat."

Amber completed the look by creating this slightly deconstructed, twisted rose braid up-do for the perfect finishing touch.
