Hair Care for Pool and Beach

It’s the summertime and we all know that means three things: getting hot, getting wet, and a ton of cameras flashing in your direction. So how to keep your hair camera-ready and fabulous at all times without missing out on the season’s fun and frolicking?

Seven-time Emmy award winning stylist to Oprah Winfrey, Andre Walker, explains the simple tricks to protecting your hair while splashing out and enjoying the pool and beach: “People often forget how fragile hair can be, especially when it’s in the sun all day and exposed to chlorine and salty water. However, there are precautions to take in order to prevent damage before it occurs.”

So dive in and get wet, because here are some easy-to-follow tips for you to follow in the coming months when that water becomes irresistible:

CHOOSE SALT OVER CHLORINE
Sure, everyone loves a refreshing dip in the pool but if you have the choice, go for the sea. As Andre elaborates, “Chlorine strips your hair of nutrients and in the worst case scenario can even turn it green – so unless you’re going for the mermaid look and the sea isn’t an option, special chlorine remover shampoo will help to get rid of any excess chlorine.”

APPLY AN INTENSIVE HAIR MASK ONCE A WEEK
The Total Keratin Obsession Deep Conditioning Mask provides intense therapy to dry strands; wrap your hair in hot towels after applying on damp hair to intensify its affect.

RINSE YOUR HAIR IN TAP WATER, BEFORE & AFTER
“Before you jump into the pool or ocean, make sure to rinse your hair in tap water,” states Andre. “Doing so makes it more difficult for it to absorb chlorine or salt.” You should then do the same immediately afterwards – or better yet, wash it thoroughly with the Keratin Shampoo and follow through with the conditioner.

CONDITION CONDITION CONDITION
This one may seem obvious, but people often underestimate the importance of conditioner in protecting your hair from the summer elements. After you shampoo, apply a thick and moisturizing conditioner through your hair – concentrating especially on the ends. “Leave it applied for 3 to 5 minutes for best results,” says Andre. “Now go forth and swim!”
