Damien Carney, Joico’s international artistic director, has always regarded hair as an accessory, much like hats, scarves and jewelry. Here, he puts two models through very different emotions, using hair the way a sculptor would use clay, making it the ultimate medium for artistic expression. “The photographer and I looked at light, how it reflects on the hair and how hair absorbs it,” says Carney, who also wanted the makeup to be very strong, almost as if it had been air-brushed. “Makeup helps to sculpt a face too,” he says. “It’s not a commercial look, but it’s compelling and beautiful.”
