Get the Look: Jamie Chung's Golden Blonde Sombre by Denis de Souza

With blockbuster movie credits to her name like Big Hero 6, The Hangover Parts II and III, and acclaimed TV series such as Once Upon A Time, and Believe, one can say that actress Jamie Chung – who, by the way also runs her own lifestyle and fashion blog – is not only busy, she is one hardworking woman. But with Jamie it’s not just all about her. On her blog she gets involved with her readers by inviting her readers, to get involved with her. They submit their stories and some actually get shared with the world on her blog, plus they get a special gift from Jamie.

Speaks pretty well of the actress who was raised outside the hustle and bustle (and so the too often self-absorbed attitudes) of the big city, just east of L.A. But while doing good, one still has to look good. So on a perfect sunny day in Los Angeles, Jamie, a Southern California native, decided to take up an invitation from popular celebrity hair colorist and Joico hair color spokesperson, Denis de Souza. Denis, who’s created amazing hair color for the likes of Kate Mara, Mila Kunis, Rachel Bilson, Olivia Wilde, and Lucy Hale just for starters, is one of Hollywood’s trendsetters, creating current, dimensional color, that always looks natural and vibrant.

One look at Jamie and Denis knew that his trendsetting technique, the sombré, was perfect for her. He would lighten her up a bit, brushing lowlights and highlights in just the rights places so as to mimic a very natural sun-kissed effect. He would make her look fresh and vibrant yet soft, new but still a most natural, effortless color.

“This is sombré!” said Denis. “It’s not the harsh streaking and blunting of color, almost creating color blocking on hair. No. Sombré is about, beautiful, tone-on-tone, soft and seamless color that shines and creates movement, and that’s exactly what I’m giving Jamie.”

At the end of her color service at the hands of this expert Jamie took home Denis’ latest and greatest at-home haircare recommendation: Color Balance Blue. Obsessed with this duo of brass-banishing shampoo and conditioner, Denis says his brunette clients who love their highlights, have been dying for something like this to finally be on the market. Denis actually finished Jamie’s color service by applying Color Balance Blue on the spot, to make sure and cancel out any unwanted tones as well as strengthen and fortify the hair with Joico’s reconstructive technology.

Denis explains, “This shampoo and conditioner duo is formulated especially for brunettes who have been lightened or have highlights in their hair so that their salon-beautiful color doesn’t fade into that ugly orange or brassy color. This is great home maintenance to keep general color-fading at bay too.” He goes on to reveal, “Jamie was such a sweetheart! Since her big day is coming up I wanted to make sure her color looked just like who she is – young, vibrant, and just naturally beautiful.”

Re-create Denis’s hair-color look for Jamie on your own clients. Here’s the how-to direct from the celebrity colorist himself:
  1. "On Jamie Chung, I started by foiling her natural hair with high lift color, Vero K-PAK Color High Lift Ash (HLA) and 30 Volume Veroxide for soft highlights.

  2. "Then I used equal parts Vero K-PAK Chrome Demi-Permanent Crème B6 (Toffee) and A7 (Dark Ash Blonde) with Chrome Activator for soft lowlights.

3. "Then I proceeded to lighten the ends with Vero K-PAK Crème Lightener and 10 Volume Veroxide.

4. "After processing to a golden blonde I glazed the entire hair with Joico Vero K-PAK Chrome 3⁄4 oz. CLEAR and 1⁄4 oz V9.

  5. "Finally I shampooed and conditioned with Joico’s new Color Balance Blue regimen, which is perfect for brunettes like Jaime who get their hair lightened, to make sure and keep unwanted brassiness or orange tones away (or correct it if you’re starting to see it) and maintain the look at home. Gorgeous!"
