Jillian's Blogs

As we gear up (pardon the pun) for our annual High Tech issue of Launchpad, we decided to raise the bar this time around; and by "raise the bar" we mean photo shoot! In a LP first, we produced our own Portfolio-style shoot, snagging legendary editorial/runway stylist Jason Stanton to create the "cyber-punk"-inspired looks. Our fierce team also included Jason's wife and amazing makeup artist Heidi Stanton, photographer Teren Oddo and, of course, our phenomenal model Ali, who proved fearless in all things fashion and hair.

Saving the Best for Lash
Lately, I've been on a bit of a lash binge. There's just something so glamourous about batting a set of full, luscious lashes. Luckily, us beauty editors get to indulge our inner-most beauty fantasies, and I've had a chance to test drive a few fabulous options for the lash-obsessed. Here are my prime picks for pretty peepers:

Having just opened a new location in Beverly Hills, California, celeb stylist and salon owner Kristoff Ball, invited the Launchpad team for cuts and blowouts at his new eponymous digs. A mixture of eclectic art pieces, self-crafted furniture (did we mention Ball is also an accomplished carpenter) and a cool rockstar vibe (oh yeah, he's a musician too!), the atmosphere is anything but boring; just like Ball, who regaled us with exciting stories from his many years in the biz while knocking out bombshell manes in no time.

Séchoir+, blowout, dry bar
It's amazing what a good blowout can do. In honor of celebrating a milestone-worthy birthday, I took time out to visit the fabulous new hybrid blow dry bar in my neighborhood. Located on the very popular Montana Ave. in Santa Monica, California, Séchoir+ not only offers an extensive cut, color and even extension menu, but includes a downright fabulous selection of blowouts to sample, crafted by owner Nava Nabavi.

I'm in Vegas, baby! With over 900 stylists in attendance, Redken's annual Redken Artist Connection (RAC) at the Red Rock Casino and Resort is an event not to be missed. This year's RAC included Fashion Week stylist extraordinaire Guido's 2012 trend collection. From modernized retro coifs to boho braids, the collection is nothing short of stunning. Luckily for clients, RAC attendees got a chance to try their hand at the styles during yesterday's workshops. Even Redken's marketing team jumped into the fun, using each other as models to master the looks

All That Glitters...
I'm a fan of taking pleasure in the little things: a rainy day spent cozied up to a good book; an icy cold margarita on a hot day; and, of course, a "just-for-the-hell-of-it" mani. Well, I got my wish and then some courtesy of Chi Nail Bar & Organic Spa in Beverly Hills where, in the true spirit of girliness, I indulged in their signature Rockstar Gel Manicure.

Yesterday, the LP team (Executive Editor Amy Dodds, Senior Associate Editor Alyson Osterman, Associate Publisher Danielle Timsit and yours truly) ventured out of the office and into beautiful Santa Monica. The purpose of our field trip? To experience luxurious nourishing treatments courtesy of Kérastase at Luxelab salon. Now, I've had my share of moisture/reparative/shine enhancing treatments, and I have to say that this was definitely one of the best yet.

Lately, I've been realizing I'm in need of a style upgrade. While it's comfortable to rock the same 'do for years and years, it certainly isn't exciting and, quite frankly, a little drab. So me and my dull locks took a trip to the Marco Pelusi Salon in West Hollywood, California for a cut and color courtesy of Joico stylist extraordinaire Cherry Petenbrink. You can imagine Cherry's excitement when I confessed I hadn't colored my hair in over five years... my hair was practically born-again virgin.

Whatever you do, don't call it "The Rachel." Looks like haircut-happy Jennifer Aniston is at it again, revealing a considerably shorter (and more blonde!) 'do while doing press for her latest rom com Just Go With It. I'm digging the chopped crop but the brassy orange-toned hue? Not so much. Regardless, a little style experimentation from Ms. Aniston is a welcomed change. We say, "Just go with it!"

ISSE: From the Showroom Floor
As I blog from the press room here at the Long Beach Convention Center during the second day ISSE, I am overwhelmed, inspired, awe-struck, delighted and overwhelmed all over again. Who knew beauty could conjure so many emotions? Let me back things up a bit... Models at the Clairol Professional breakfast show off the brand's Soy4Plex
