At this year's NAHAs, fellow Launchpad editor Jillian Gordon and I were given a special pre-awards treat: Internationally acclaimed editorial stylists Sherri Jessee and Mikala Vandenbroucke prepped us to the nines with hair, makeup, jewelry, the works! We felt like probeauty royalty, if only for a few hours. ;)

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: I love seeing women help other women. It doesn’t seem to happen often enough, though I do feel that those in our wonderful world of beauty truly do make strides to help one another.
On the day of Redken’s Smooth Lock launch, the weather couldn’t have been more tress-unfriendly; it was in the high 90s with 70% humidity in NYC, where everything is hotter, smellier and frizzier. “Right now there’s a massive desire for manageable hair,” Redken brand ambassador Rodney Cutler says to the gathered editors, who’s manes are coated in sweat and frizz. “Smoothing treatments are about making life easier.”
Even when it is not summertime, the “beachy” curl look is one that many women like to sport—it’s sexy, a perfect balance of classy and messy, and conveys a carefree, irresistible spirit. Achieving this hairstyle takes a little time and effort, but the end result is spectacular. Simply follow these guidelines:
1. Apply flat iron spray. This will help to maintain moisture, protect the hair and extend the life of the set.
As we gear up (pardon the pun) for our annual High Tech issue of Launchpad, we decided to raise the bar this time around; and by "raise the bar" we mean photo shoot! In a LP first, we produced our own Portfolio-style shoot, snagging legendary editorial/runway stylist Jason Stanton to create the "cyber-punk"-inspired looks. Our fierce team also included Jason's wife and amazing makeup artist Heidi Stanton, photographer Teren Oddo and, of course, our phenomenal model Ali, who proved fearless in all things fashion and hair.
Last Friday, I kicked off the weekend with one of the best blow-outs I've ever had at The Private Room in Beverly Hills, California. Just shy of a year old, the studio caters to the city's sophisticated clientele with an intimate atmosphere accompanied by fabulous artwork, tasty lattes (or wine, if you'd prefer!) and, most importantly, a small but very accomplished staff that seems to be all smiles, all the time. Salon owner Tina Dizon blew out my tresses in record time (I'd have to guess approximately 20 mins.!), but the best part?
Recently I was honored to Visit Michaeljohn Salon, and what a treat! Located in the heart of Beverly Hills, the cozy space was jamming when I arrived on Friday afternoon. I met with Justin Surh, an accomplished stylist and colorist with 25+ years experience. He worked with Toni&Guy and Vidal Sassoon in London before he moved stateside. In addition to styling for the runway, editorial and TV commercials, Justin has worked with some of the best-known celebs. Julia Roberts? Check.
