This Isn’t Your Grandmother’s Hairnet
The hairnet, although today thought of as a cafeteria mom’s must-have, has a very significant ‘hair story’ in women’s history. During World War Two in the 1940s, women joined the workforce in droves, taking over jobs traditionally done by men. By mid-1943, nearly 90 per cent of single women and 80 per cent of married women were employed in critical work for the war effort. Of course the elaborate long hairstyles of the time proved hazardous on the job.

When planning our education - whether it be digital, online or show/classes - and when creating mood boards for editorial shoots, it’s always an inspiration to look at what happens on the runways. 

In the beginning of the year, I shared my mission to speak and work differently to demonstrate how stylists can deliver more value to clients in today’s world.  Changing language to start conversations that open the door to discovering new creative approaches in cutting and finishing globally influenced shapes.  Using condensed and precision cutting to create modern details, beginning cuts in unfamiliar sections of the head and working with sectioning patterns to cut and finish hair effortlessly and quickly.

Confession: I've never had my lashes done! Or I hadn't ever, up until a couple of weeks ago. I always thought my lashes were pretty decent, especially with the help of mascara. But being in the beauty industry, or at least writing about the beauty industry, imbues one with the desire to push the envelope. My lashes were OK—fairly dark, medium length and I had a lot of 'em—but it always bothered me that they didn't have a curl, or even hold a curl.
