Bleached Babes?

Gwen Stefani and her son Kingston sport matching funky hairdos as they leave Jimmy Kimmel Live! in Hollywood

I’ve always thought of Gwen Stefani as untouchably cool. That voice…that stage presence…that hair! Can anyone truly pull off a peroxide-pale pompadour quite like Gwen? I think not.

But, I kind of find it un-cool that she’s turned her three-year-old, Kingston, onto the bottle—or, rather, the bleach. Sporting a peroxide-laden ’do like his mum’s, Kingston certainly looks cool (for a three-year-old), but is it necessary?

Short detour: When I was young, my mom started my annual trips to the beauty salon around eight or nine years old for perms. I don’t really remember having much of an opinion about it at first, though I do remember being immensely bored during the process, overcome by fumes and particularly incensed when a plastic head-covering melted to my head under a heat-dryer. But, hey—it was the ’80s! If you didn’t have a permanent wave and a Body Glove T-shirt, you simply couldn’t hang.

But, you see, I was eight, which is, in kid years, a huge difference from three. Is highlighting your kids’ locks a thing of millennium? We all know Maddox and Pax Jolie-Pitt are doing it…

The irony: The trend right now, according to many celeb colorists I’ve chatted with, is to weave in dimensional tones to mimic that multitonal haircolor you had when you were a child. After all, don’t we all want to recapture our youth? Why strip little Kingston of his covetable, virgin haircolor? And is it even safe to do?

What do you think? Is it OK to bleach little kids’ hair?
