From January 5 through January 16, 2015, the participants in the 2014-2015 Young Designers Competition will be displaying their work in a gallery at the Evanston Art Center in Evanston, Illinois, giving the public the chance to see the entries before the Young Designers Event where the finalist will be announced.
The competition, which is hosted by the Independent Cosmetics Manufacturers and Distributors (ICMAD), challenges entrants to design packaging for a specialized cosmetic container. It offers college students the chance to gain invaluable experience in the cosmetics design field. The competition will culminate with the Young Designers Event Dinner in Newport Beach, California, and will feature Chaz Dean, the founder of Wen haircare products, as the keynote speaker. The first-place winner of the competition will receive a $5,000 contract assignment with beauty packaging company East Hill Industries to design a new line of bottles.
Headquartered in Richardson, Texas, East Hill Industries designs and manufactures cosmetic packaging for some of the industry’s best-known brands. Founded in 2005, the brand offers cutting-edge, custom design for its clients, covering everything from classic silk screening to 3D printing. The winner of the Young Designers Competition will be given a design assignment for a new line of bottles.
Created to foster creativity and encourage innovation, the competition requires students to create a unique primary and secondary packaging design for a cosmetic container. Founded in 1998, the competition highlights the importance of package design, a specialized and highly in-demand design form that combines esthetic beauty with functionality. Judges for the 2014-2015 competition include executives from top beauty companies like HATCHBEAUTY and MATUSE (a California wetsuit company). This year’s participating colleges include the American Academy of Art, Colorado Mesa University, Colorado Mountain College, Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM) Los Angeles, FIDM San Francisco, Penn College of Arts & Design, Miami School of Art & Design, University of Nevada, Las Vegas, Louisiana State University, Creighton University, Texas Women’s University, and Chapman University.
